The number on the quote is never the real story

A base aluminium frame tells you almost nothing about the final bill. The same 1200 x 1000 opening can be priced as a budget slider, a thermally broken awning, or a double-glazed, coastal-grade assembly, and each version solves a different problem. That is why the most useful way to read a quote is not by staring at the total first, but by checking how many specification layers sit on top of the base extrusion.

1. Opening size sets the floor, not the ceiling

A standard rectangular opening in a common size is inexpensive because it fits established manufacturing patterns. Tooling is already set. Glass is easy to cut. Frame stock is used efficiently. Installers know the sequence by heart.

Move away from standard dimensions and the price starts climbing before anyone has talked about finish or glazing. Larger spans need deeper or thicker sections, and that means more aluminium, more glass weight, and more structural confidence in the installation. Non-standard shapes push the cost even harder because fabrication time increases and waste rises. An arched or trapezoidal window is not expensive simply because it looks special; it is expensive because it breaks the production rhythm that standard rectangular openings rely on.

2. The operating style adds mechanical load

A fixed panel is the cheapest moving-less option because there is no movement to engineer. Once a unit opens and closes, the quote changes.

  • Sliding windows need tracks, rollers, and weathering designed around a moving sash.
  • Awning and casement windows need stays, hinges, locking points, and tighter sealing.
  • Bi-fold doors need multiple hinge sets, alignment control, and enough tolerance to keep several leaves tracking cleanly over time.

Two units can look similar from across a room and still live in completely different price bands because one is just glass in a frame and the other is a system of moving parts. The more points that have to align, the more time and skill the manufacturer has to put into the assembly.

3. Frame performance is where the quote starts to separate

This is the layer most buyers underestimate. A non-thermally broken aluminium frame is usually the entry point. It is straightforward, economical, and good enough for many mild-climate or budget-led projects. Add a thermal break and the frame becomes a different product class.

The reason is simple: aluminium conducts heat very well. Without a thermal break, the interior and exterior of the frame are essentially connected through metal. That can mean more heat loss in winter, more heat gain in summer, and more condensation risk. A thermally broken frame inserts a non-conductive barrier between those sections, which improves energy performance and, in many cases, helps the project meet stricter compliance targets.

That upgrade is not cosmetic. It is structural and manufacturing-intensive, and it commonly shifts the price upward by a meaningful margin before any glass changes are added. On a quoted job, the thermal break is often the first place where two suppliers stop comparing like with like.

4. Glass usually drives the biggest visible jump

Glass is where pricing can move the fastest.

Single glazing sits at the low end because it is simple and lighter. Double glazing adds an air or gas cavity, better insulation, more weight, and more material cost. Add low-E coating and argon fill and the performance climbs again, along with the price. Laminated glass, toughened glass, acoustic glass, or bushfire-compliant make-ups add more layers still.

The practical effect is easy to miss because two quotes can describe the same opening in almost identical language while hiding completely different glass builds inside the frame. One unit might be clear single glazing. Another might be a low-E double-glazed package with laminated safety glass. From the outside, both are just a window. Inside the quote, one can cost dramatically more because the glass assembly is doing far more work.

This is also why installers and fabricators ask so many questions about orientation, climate zone, acoustic exposure, and BAL requirements. The glass specification is not a decoration choice; it is one of the main cost engines in the whole assembly.

5. Finish and colour become expensive when they stop being standard

Standard powder coat colours are usually the easiest part of the quote because manufacturers run them in volume. White, black, and a few common architectural tones are familiar, efficient, and repeatable.

Custom colours change that. A specific RAL match or a special texture finish reduces batching efficiency and adds preparation time. Marine-grade coating pushes the spec again because it is designed to tolerate salt exposure and corrosion better than a basic inland finish.

On a large project, finish can quietly become a major cost difference. Two same-size windows may be identical in frame shape, glazing, and hardware, yet the coastal-spec version costs far more simply because the coating system is built to survive a harsher environment. That premium can be completely justified, but it is still a premium — and it needs to be recognized as one.

6. Hardware is small, but it is never cheap for long

Hardware is the easiest place for a quote to look similar while behaving very differently in real use.

A basic single-point lock or standard roller keeps the budget down. Upgrade to multi-point locking, better friction stays, stronger rollers, concealed hinges, soft-close systems, or higher cycle-rated components and the bill rises. That rise is not arbitrary. Hardware determines how well the unit closes, how secure it feels, how long it lasts, and how much maintenance it needs.

A cheaper quote can sometimes be cheaper because the hardware package is visibly leaner. That does not always mean the product is bad. It does mean the long-term performance expectation is different. For a rental or a low-use secondary space, the lower tier may be enough. For a primary living area or a high-traffic entry, the hardware spec matters more than the brochure photo.

7. Compliance and site conditions are hidden cost multipliers

This layer is where the price stops being about the product alone.

Compliance may require tougher glass, stronger frame sections, specific sealing performance, or documented testing. Coastal exposure can require upgraded finishes and stainless components. Bushfire zones can add glazing and frame requirements that are impossible to ignore. Commercial applications can add stronger cycle ratings and engineering documentation.

Then there is installation access.

A straightforward like-for-like replacement into an easy opening is one thing. Fitting a large bi-fold into a prepared structural opening on a difficult site is another. Scaffolding, lifting gear, removal of old units, making good around disturbed finishes, and structural adjustments all live here. This is why supply-only and fully installed pricing should never be mixed together. The product may be the same, but the job is not.

How the same opening turns into different price tiers

Take a standard-sized exterior opening. Three quotes can arrive for what seems to be the same job:

  • Option one: basic sliding aluminium unit, standard finish, clear glazing, simple hardware, supply only
  • Option two: same size, thermally broken frame, double glazing, upgraded locking, installed
  • Option three: same opening widened or reworked for a multi-panel or bi-fold system, premium glazing, custom colour, full install, and possible structural work

All three may solve the same need: closing a wall opening. But they are not comparable products.

The first quote is light because it carries fewer layers. The second is heavier because it improves thermal performance and includes labour. The third is the highest because it changes the entire engineering approach, not just the finish.

That is why quoting by square metre alone can be misleading. Square metre pricing only makes sense after the spec stack is fixed. Without that, the cheapest number is often just the thinnest description.

What to check before comparing quotes

When two suppliers are far apart on price, the difference usually lives in one of these lines:

  • exact opening size and configuration
  • fixed, sliding, awning, casement, or bi-fold operation
  • thermally broken or non-thermally broken frame
  • single, double, low-E, laminated, or acoustic glazing
  • standard or custom colour finish
  • hardware brand, lock type, and cycle rating
  • supply only or fully installed scope
  • removal, disposal, flashing, sealing, and making good
  • compliance extras such as BAL or acoustic requirements

If any of those items do not match, the quotes are not truly competing with each other.

The cheapest quote is often the least complete one

A low price can be real value when the spec is clear and the scope is identical. It can also be a sign that one or more layers were removed to make the figure look attractive.

That is why the best comparison starts with the performance target, not the budget target. If the opening needs energy efficiency, coastal durability, acoustic control, or high security, those requirements should be locked in first. Once those layers are fixed, the remaining comparison becomes much cleaner. One supplier may still be cheaper, but now the difference is meaningful instead of confusing.

A quote that leaves out thermal performance, downgrades the glass, simplifies the hardware, and excludes installation is not a bargain in the same category as a complete quote. It is a different build disguised as a lower number.

The right way to read aluminium pricing is to treat every quote as a stack of decisions. Once that lens is in place, the total stops looking arbitrary and starts looking engineered.
