Most people learning AI agents start with LangChain, get lost in the first lesson, and quit. The fix isn't a better course. It's the order.
Here are 10 free courses from Microsoft, Hugging Face and LangChain, arranged in 4 stages that build on each other.
Stage 1: Basics
- AI for Beginners (Microsoft): 12 weeks, 24 lessons with quizzes and labs. Neural networks, computer vision, language, AI ethics. https://github.com/microsoft/AI-For-Beginners
- Generative AI for Beginners (Microsoft): 21 lessons on prompt engineering, calling LLMs from code, and building chat and search apps. https://github.com/microsoft/generative-ai-for-beginners
Stage 2: Agents
- AI Agents for Beginners (Microsoft): tool use, planning, multi-agent systems, memory, agentic RAG, security and agents in production. https://github.com/microsoft/ai-agents-for-beginners
- MCP for Beginners (Microsoft): 13 modules on the Model Context Protocol. You build your own MCP server and client. https://github.com/microsoft/mcp-for-beginners
- Hugging Face MCP Course (built with Anthropic): MCP end to end, with a fundamentals certificate. https://huggingface.co/learn/mcp-course/unit0/introduction
Stage 3: Frameworks
- LangChain Essentials: 18 lessons, about 1 hour. https://academy.langchain.com/courses/langchain-essentials-python
- LangGraph Essentials: 13 lessons, about 1 hour, including human-in-the-loop approval. https://academy.langchain.com/courses/langgraph-essentials-python
- Introduction to LangChain: 30 lessons, about 1.5 hours, from your first agent to multi-agent systems. https://academy.langchain.com/courses/foundation-introduction-to-langchain-python
Stage 4: Build
- Introduction to LangGraph: 55 lessons, about 6 hours. Memory, human-in-the-loop, deployment. https://academy.langchain.com/courses/intro-to-langgraph
- Hugging Face AI Agents Course: smolagents, LlamaIndex and LangGraph, with a final project where you create, test and certify your own agent. https://huggingface.co/learn/agents-course/unit0/introduction
How long does it take?
My rough estimate at one hour a day: stages 1 and 2 take about three weeks, stage 3 about one week, and stage 4 another three to four weeks. Roughly two months from zero to your own agent.
Two tips before you start
- Don't collect courses. Finish one stage and build something small before moving on.
- Keep your first agent boring. An agent that reads your email and drafts replies teaches you more than a fancy multi-agent demo you never finish.
All courses are free to access at the linked sources; some labs may need a free account or your own API key.
Which stage are you at right now? Tell me in the comments.
