Finally, we're excited to announce the first release of OrgExplorer v1.0.0, launched on October 25, 2026!
OrgExplorer started with a simple idea: building a platform that helps contributors, mentors, and organization admins better understand their open-source communities through meaningful insights.
Where It All Started
The idea came during the initial phase of GSoC, when I started contributing to open source and searching for an organization that matched my skills, interests, and goals. Finding the right organization took me a considerable amount of time. I had to explore different repositories, understand the organization's work, and figure out whether it was the right fit for me.
After going through this experience, I realized that I might not be the only contributor facing this challenge. That led me to propose a platform where contributors could explore open-source organizations and gain useful insights before deciding where to contribute.
I shared this idea with Bruno, our organization admin, and explained the problem and my proposed solution. He liked the idea and added it to the GSoC project list. Later, he suggested expanding its scope beyond contributors, since mentors and admins also need insights into their organizations, but from different perspectives.
That's how OrgExplorer began — with a contributor's problem that gradually evolved into a platform designed for the broader open-source community.
The GSoC Journey
After being selected for GSoC, I learned that I wouldn't be working on this project alone. Another contributor, Ritik, would be working alongside me. At that point, I wasn't sure how we would coordinate, approach the project together, or align our ideas.
During the bonding period, we connected, discussed our perspectives, and gradually developed a better understanding of how to work together. Although we faced a few challenges along the way, the guidance and support of our mentors and admin helped us work through them and move forward as a team.
A special thanks to Bhavik, our mentor, and Bruno, our admin, for their guidance and support throughout this journey. Their contributions were an important part of making OrgExplorer possible.
Building, Learning, and Growing
Once the coding period began, we started turning the initial idea into a working product. The journey involved much more than implementing features. We learned how to collaborate with other contributors, work through code reviews, make technical decisions, and approach problems more effectively.
We also learned how to use AI tools thoughtfully to support our workflow and spend more time focusing on the core engineering challenges.
From understanding the original problem to implementing analytics and visualizations, every stage brought new challenges and learning opportunities. The experience helped us grow not only as developers but also as open-source contributors who understand the importance of collaboration, communication, and community feedback.
The coding period eventually came to an end, bringing with it a lot of learning, memorable experiences, and, finally, a product we could share with the community.
That product is OrgExplorer.
What's Available in OrgExplorer v1.0.0?
OrgExplorer helps users explore GitHub organizations, understand repository activity, and discover insights from different perspectives.
The first version includes:
- Organization Overview: Explore organization statistics and get an overview of repositories and activity.
- Repository Insights: Analyze repository metrics, including stars, forks, watchers, and recent activity.
- Contributor Analytics: Explore top contributors and understand contributions across repositories.
- Repository Comparison & Ranking: Compare repositories and identify popular projects using a weighted scoring system.
- Interactive Visualizations: Explore repository and contributor data through interactive charts and graphs.
- GitHub Integration: Retrieve public organization and repository data using the GitHub REST API, with optional Personal Access Token (PAT) support for GraphQL-powered insights.
- Advanced Metrics: Analyze key aspects of organization performance and repository activity.
Whether you're a student looking for an organization to contribute to, a contributor exploring projects, a mentor tracking community activity, or an admin seeking a broader organizational overview, OrgExplorer aims to make these insights easier to access.
Try OrgExplorer and Help Us Improve
We're happy to put our first version out there, but this is only the beginning. There are plenty of opportunities to improve the existing experience and introduce new features in upcoming releases.
We'd love for you to try OrgExplorer and share your experience with us. Tell us what works, what could be better, and which insights or features would be most useful for your role. Your feedback and feature requests will help us prioritize improvements that benefit contributors, mentors, maintainers, and organization admins alike.

What's Next?
Releasing v1.0.0 is an important milestone, but there's still a lot more to explore and build. We want OrgExplorer to evolve based on real user needs rather than assumptions about what people might find useful.
If you have an idea for a feature, a particular metric you'd like to see, or a different way to understand your open-source organization, please let us know.
Let's make OrgExplorer better together, one release at a time.
Thank you to everyone who supported us throughout this journey!
