Disclosure: neither GitHub nor JetBrains pays us a commission on this comparison. Copilot has no publisher affiliate program (GitHub runs a partner program for building extensions, not this). JetBrains AI is unverified — we're not enrolled, no tracking ID in our link.
According to DevTools Review's hands-on testing across 11 AI coding tools, we spent seven months running GitHub Copilot and JetBrains AI Assistant side by side — Copilot across VS Code and IntelliJ, JetBrains AI exclusively inside IntelliJ and WebStorm — on real Java, Kotlin, TypeScript and Python codebases. Rechecking the page this week to syndicate it, we found the Pricing section undersells both tools.
What the testing actually found
On raw inline completions, Copilot wins on speed: near-zero latency versus JetBrains AI's 200-400ms lag, which you notice the moment you switch. But JetBrains AI wins on type-awareness in strongly-typed languages — implementing an interface, it predicted method signatures with correct generics and override annotations about 80% of the time, against Copilot's 70% on the same task. Copilot's overall "immediately usable without edits" rate across Java/TypeScript was about 85%.
Agent mode: we had Copilot's agent build a complete CRUD feature — model, repository, service, controller, tests — across six files in a Spring Boot project in about five minutes, including recovering from a compile error it introduced. JetBrains AI's agent is more constrained by design (it works through IDE APIs and inspections rather than shell access), which is safer but can't do that end-to-end run.
Where our own page fell behind
Copilot's pricing table on our page: Free / Pro $10/mo / Business $19/user/mo / Enterprise $39/user/mo. That's what Copilot cost when we wrote it. It's missing two tiers that have been live for months: Pro+ at $39/mo and Max at $100/mo — both confirmed on GitHub's own plans page as of this week.
JetBrains AI's pricing table on our page: "Included with your JetBrains IDE subscription" plus "a standalone AI subscription (~$10/month)." That's not wrong, but it's not the current structure either. JetBrains restructured its AI pricing around named tiers with separate personal and commercial rates, verified first-party from the product data on jetbrains.com/ai-ides/buy/:
- AI Pro (personal): $10/mo ($100/yr)
- AI Pro (commercial): $20/user/mo ($200/yr)
- AI Ultimate (personal): $30/mo ($300/yr)
- AI Ultimate (commercial): $60/user/mo ($600/yr)
Our page never mentions the Ultimate tier or the personal/commercial split at all. (Several independent pricing trackers also report a free "AI Free" tier with limited local completions — we haven't been able to verify that one first-party against JetBrains' own site, so we're flagging it as unconfirmed rather than stating it as fact.)
Why it matters for the actual recommendation
Our page's pricing verdict says JetBrains AI is "effectively free" if you already pay for IntelliJ Ultimate — true for the Pro tier, but the Ultimate tier is a real $30-60/mo add-on some teams will hit once they want the stronger model. And Copilot buyers comparing "is $10/mo Copilot cheaper than JetBrains AI" are now also choosing between Copilot Pro, Pro+, and Max, not a single number.
Both tools are worth their spot in the comparison — Copilot for breadth and agent capability, JetBrains AI for IntelliJ-native type awareness. We're updating the source page's pricing tables; until then, treat the numbers above as the current ones.
