This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge: Week 1 — "Touch Grass"
🌿 The Premise: Turning "Touch Grass" Into a Collectible Outdoor Hobby
In developer and tech culture, "go touch grass" has become the universal prescription for debugging burnout, terminal fatigue, and endless screen time.
For Week 1 of Hacktoberfest 2026, the challenge prompt challenged builders:
"Build something with open-source AI at its core that gets people off the screen and into the world. The best builds here should make the screen the shortest part of the experience."
We took that prompt to heart. Instead of another screen-heavy analytics dashboard that demands hours of attention, we built Gramina: The Touch Grass Postcard Club.
Gramina turns outdoor walks, hikes, and park visits into a delightful botanical philately (stamp collecting) adventure where screen time is under 10 seconds:
- Pocket the Screen: You put your phone in your pocket and step outside to a local trail, neighborhood park, or forest.
- 5-Second Real Snapshot: When you spot a curious patch of turf, wild meadow grass, clover, or moss, you take a quick photo.
- Open-Source AI & Gemma Botanical Engine: On-device pixel intelligence classifies the specimen, extracts color histograms, calculates a real Touchability Index (softness rating, morning dew retention, scent notes), and writes natural history lore powered by Google's open-weight Gemma intelligence.
- Perforated Vintage Postage Stamps: Your real photo is minted into an authentic, perforated postage stamp complete with scalloped edges, denomination, and a realistic ink cancellation postmark stamped with your observation date and trail coordinates.
- 3D Flippable Field Postcards: Mount your minted stamps onto a double-sided vintage field postcard, flip it in 3D with perspective matrix physics, pen handwritten notes in cursive ink, and export or print it to send to friends.
- Botanical Passport & Streak: Every real observation grows your permanent botanical passport album and increments your genuine outdoor streak.
🎨 Aesthetic Vision: Tactile Claymorphism & "Grami" the Mascot
We drew inspiration from modern tactile craft web design (specifically richkeed.tech), replacing sterile flat cards with warm, pillowy, organic clay:
-
Warm Earthy Palette:
- Canvas Cream (
#F6EDDF&#FFFAF1) - Deep Pine Green Clay (
#2F6B52) - Sunlit Tangerine (
#F4A24A) - Terracotta Postmark Ink (
#D8734A) - Soft Sage Foliage (
#A9C4A4) - Rich Espresso Ink (
#3A2C24) — no harsh synthetic blacks!
- Canvas Cream (
-
Clay Physics & Bevels: Every card features dual pillowy drop shadows (
Offset(4, 7), blur14) and soft top-left specular highlights. Buttons physically squash down to0.94xon tap with spring release. - Grami the Mascot: A living, breathing vector clay moss blob who bobs gently, blinks periodically, wiggles his sprouted grass antenna, and delivers witty outdoor reminders and botanical encouragement.
🧠 Why Open Innovation Matters Here
The challenge asks: Where does an open-based approach work better than a closed API?
-
Zero-Signal Backcountry Privacy:
- Trails, national parks, and remote valleys rarely have reliable cellular signal. Gramina's open models run locally on-device without cloud round-trips.
- More importantly: your private GPS coordinates, hiking paths, and real-time photos stay strictly on your device — never harvested by corporate ad trackers or closed telemetry platforms.
-
$0 Operational Cost & Community Sovereignty:
- No API token meters, no paid subscription keys, and no paywalled rate limits. Open-source software belongs to everyone who steps outside.
-
Open Botanical Weights (Gemma):
- Powered by open weights (Gemma 2 / Gemma 3), allowing naturalists, park rangers, and local conservation communities to inspect, audit, and fine-tune regional flora datasets without asking for corporate permission.
🏆 Partner Prize Categories Entered
- Overall Winner: Novel concept, high-craft claymorphic visual execution, zero-fake data integrity, and deeply aligned with the "Touch Grass" spirit.
- Best Use of Gemma ($200): Gemma generates the scientific field lore, the humorous "Touchability Index" scores, and custom postal dispatches.
