The EU's AI Labelling Code Is Live. Voluntary Is Not Optional.

What changed on 2 August Article 50 is live. The EU AI Act's transparency obligations applied from 2 August 2026. They are duties in the statute, not guidance. There is a Code of Practice, and it is voluntary. The European Commission published the final Code of Practice on marking and labelling AI-generated content on 10 June 2026. Signing it is not a legal requirement. The Article 50 duties are. Signing buys you an argument. Following a positive assessment of the code, providers and deployers who sign it can rely on its measures to demonstrate compliance with the Act's rules on labelling and detection of AI-generated content, deepfakes and certain text publications.
