iPhone Duo "Crackgate": Screens Failing Within Days as Apple Acknowledges the Issue

Apple's first foldable is barely a week old and already has a nickname nobody wanted. Since the iPhone Duo went on sale October 23, owners across Australia, the US, Canada, China, and India have reported the same failure: the inner display cracking along the center fold, usually with bright pixel lines shooting across the screen. Some phones died within hours of unboxing.

The stories are remarkably alike. A Melbourne owner heard a loud crack after fewer than 20 openings. A Dallas buyer felt the hinge stick at 45 degrees, pushed through, heard a pop — and watched bright lines spread. Bloomberg verified the problem with half a dozen customers independently.

Apple responded October 26: it's "aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units" and says affected users "should contact AppleCare for a replacement." An internal memo to stores this week tells technicians to inspect and repair or replace affected units. No recall, no public repair program, no stated cause.

iFixit's teardown points at the hinge — a mechanism sitting just off-center, near where the bright lines appear, that could damage the tiny electronics under the display. Dust was found inside one unit despite the IP68 rating. Meanwhile CNET's folding machine passed 121,000 folds, while a YouTuber's hand-folded unit cracked at 75,001. Samsung rates its foldables at 500,000; Apple never published a number for the Duo.

If yours fails: contact AppleCare (no AppleCare+ needed for this defect), cite Apple's October 26 statement if anyone calls it drop damage — the out-of-warranty repair is $999 — and note the 14-day return window runs to November 6.
