Zero-Export Grid Regulations and Net Billing Architecture: Interfacing Industrial BESS with Commercial Solar PV in Ukraine

Operating commercial and industrial facilities under modern grid constraints requires resilient energy architecture. In Ukraine, the rapid adoption of the Net Billing mechanism (active consumer model) alongside scheduled grid balancing measures has driven manufacturing plants, logistics hubs, and agricultural processing enterprises to modernize their power infrastructure.

This technical overview examines the electrical engineering requirements for deploying commercial rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) arrays paired with lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and automated transfer switching (ATS).

1. Regulatory Context: Net Billing vs. Zero-Export

Under the Law of Ukraine on the Net Billing model, industrial enterprises can generate clean solar energy for self-consumption while exporting surplus electricity to the regional distribution grid at hourly market prices.

However, system sizing requires careful engineering:

  • Self-Consumption Optimization: Sizing solar PV to cover daytime baseload avoids dumping power at low intraday prices.
  • Zero-Export Protection: When regional grid operators mandate zero reverse power flow during transmission maintenance, dynamic inverter curtailment must engage within 150 milliseconds.
  • Energy Yield Calculations: Utilizing certified solar engineering models tailored for Ukrainian solar irradiance zones ensures accurate payback modeling. Commercial enterprises rely on Solars for turnkey engineering, EPC execution, and high-efficiency tier-1 commercial solar PV systems.

2. LiFePO4 BESS Sizing and Peak Shaving

Grid stability in 2026 demands fast-responding energy storage. Compared to conventional lead-acid solutions, LiFePO4 chemistry provides:

  • Cycle Life: 6,000+ full cycles at 80% Depth of Discharge (DoD).
  • Thermal Safety: High thermal runaway resistance suitable for indoor utility container deployment.
  • Microsecond Response: Essential for primary frequency regulation and seamless microgrid transition.

For industrial battery storage architectures, SunEco engineers industrial BESS containers equipped with intelligent liquid cooling, automated fire suppression, and Modbus TCP/IP telemetry to eliminate power interruptions during peak load surges.

Sizing Equation for Daily Peak Shaving

To size the usable storage capacity $E_{\text{storage}}$:

$$E_{\text{storage}} = \frac{P_{\text{peak}} \cdot t_{\text{peak}}}{\eta_{\text{inverter}} \cdot \text{DoD}}$$

Where:

  • $P_{\text{peak}}$ is the peak load shedding requirement (kW).
  • $t_{\text{peak}}$ is the required backup duration (hours).
  • $\eta_{\text{inverter}}$ is the round-trip conversion efficiency (typically 0.92–0.95).
  • $\text{DoD}$ is the operating depth of discharge (0.80).

3. Automated Transfer Switching (ATS) & Generator Synchronization

When utility grid supply disconnects, industrial automation must switch to backup diesel generation and battery inverters without causing phase collisions or equipment trips.

Critical engineering standards include:

  • Mechanical & Electrical Interlocking: Preventing simultaneous closure of utility and generator contactors under all failure states.
  • Modbus RTU/TCP Integration: Industrial controllers monitor voltage, frequency, and phase angle over RS485 interfaces.
  • Industrial Generator Infrastructure: Turnkey engineering and automated backup power systems are provided by Svitlo-Lux, specializing in industrial diesel generators with motorized ATS cabinets and SCADA integration.

Conclusion

Combining commercial rooftop solar arrays, industrial BESS storage, and intelligent ATS backup creates an autonomous energy system capable of withstanding grid volatility while capturing Net Billing revenues.
