When you operate cloud services with a devops culture, you depend on data from real world observations of the customer experience with your service. You actively seek to understand exactly when your customer experience changes for better or for worse so that you can deliver the best experience no matter what changes in your production environment. Many AWS customers use structured logs (e.g., JSON) for devops monitoring because it simplifies reporting on the data for operational investigations. But our most knowledgeable monitoring customers go a step further and use a capability in CloudWatch Logs called Embedded Metric format - EMF. Here’s a fun fact -- thirty percent of all AWS custom metrics are now generated via EMF. Why are so many customers using EMF for their service-specific operational metrics? It’s simple – EMF helps our customers get the most detailed monitoring and devops analytics with the least effort and cost.
