A Learning Platform That Learns with You

Many online learning systems can keep a record of where you are in your studying by tracking aspects like XP and streaks but are unable to actually learn from the way you study and therefore do not provide you with specific guidance on your mistakes. Because of this inability to remember how you learn, many learners are unable to change their behaviors in order to improve their proficiency.

We developed the platform NeuroLearn (Smart Tutor) to provide students with a more customized experience that incorporates an attractive visual dashboard of their progress along with quantitative features to maintain interest in their efforts. We also include several ways to measure accuracy, streaks, and performance to help maintain the student's ongoing commitment to studying.

My role in this process was to develop a method of establishing learning retention, as opposed to only tracking, by using the newly created Flashcard System to add active recall to the student. Students can create subject-specific flashcards and then have the opportunity for self-testing and to then self-reveal the answer to their test; turning their typical passive study habits into an engaging and interactive study experience.

In addition, the flashcards work seamlessly with the entire process of learning, linking to areas where the students were not performing well, as well as identifying exactly when and how long to study for optimal retention of information. This ultimately helps students develop the ability to move from simply knowing to being able to recall that knowledge for a lifetime.

As we continue to develop this project, the most significant lesson learned is that while it is easy to create appealing visual designs for user interfaces (UI), developing a method by which systems can adapt to how others learn is extremely difficult. As with any industry, NeuroLearn continues to evolve towards developing systems that enhance a learner’s overall experience by providing insight and adaption to the learner's efforts rather than solely tracking them.
