AISSEE Maths Preparation: How Toppers Actually Think About the Paper

Dubey ji called me in November. His son had been preparing for 5 months.

"Sharma ji, my son understands the concepts. He can solve problems. But when I watch him during mock tests — he freezes on hard questions. He spends too long. He runs out of time on the easy ones at the end. How do I fix this specific problem?"

This is one of the most common late-preparation issues — not a knowledge problem but a paper management problem. Students who understand Maths perfectly still underperform because they don't think about the paper as a whole.

Here's how top scorers actually approach AISSEE Maths differently.

The Paper Is Not a Sequence — It's a Portfolio

Most students approach AISSEE Maths as a sequence: Question 1, then 2, then 3, all the way to 50.

This is the wrong frame. The paper is a portfolio of 50 questions of varying difficulty and time cost. The goal is to maximise marks from the portfolio in 65-70 minutes — not to complete the sequence.

The key insight: A question solved correctly in 30 seconds is worth exactly as much as a question solved correctly in 3 minutes. But the 30-second question leaves time for 4 more questions. The 3-minute question doesn't.

Managing the portfolio well — spending time where it returns most marks — is the skill that separates 40/50 from 48/50.

The Three-Category Scan

Before attempting a single question, top scorers spend 60-90 seconds scanning all 50 questions and mentally categorising each.

Category E (Easy — under 60 seconds): Questions where the method is instantly obvious. Direct formula application. Simple number problems. Basic percentage calculation. These are guaranteed marks — solve immediately.

Category M (Medium — 60-90 seconds): Questions where the method is clear but calculation takes some working. Word problems with one concept. Moderate geometry. These are high-probability marks — do after E.

Category H (Hard — 2+ minutes or uncertain): Questions where the method isn't immediately obvious or the calculation is complex. Multi-concept word problems. Tricky geometry. Leave these for last.

The execution: Do all E questions first. Then M questions. Then H questions with remaining time.

What this produces: All guaranteed easy marks are collected before time runs out. Hard questions get whatever time remains — they're attempted rather than preventing easy questions from being reached.

The 90-Second Rule

For any question that hasn't been solved within 90 seconds — stop. Mark it. Move to next.

This is the most important single discipline in AISSEE Maths time management. Students who don't have this rule consistently spend 3-4 minutes on hard questions, cannot solve them anyway, and have now lost both the 3-4 minutes AND the marks from 3-4 easy questions they didn't reach.

With the 90-second rule: difficult question takes 90 seconds, gets marked and skipped, easy question is solved in 25 seconds, medium question in 70 seconds, and the hard question is returned to with fresh eyes at the end.

Often — the hard question that was skipped is solved in 45 seconds when returned to after the mental refresh of having done other questions. The fresh perspective changes the approach.

Mental Calculation as Exam Strategy

Most students treat mental calculation shortcuts as a nice-to-have. Top scorers treat them as required infrastructure.

The calculation that takes 18 seconds vs 45 seconds:

15% of 840 — student without shortcuts: converts to 0.15 × 840, works through the multiplication = 27 seconds.

Student with shortcuts: 10% = 84, 5% = 42, 15% = 126 = 6 seconds.

21 seconds saved per percentage question. Across 8-10 percentage-related questions in AISSEE Maths: 168-210 seconds saved — nearly 3 minutes of additional time.

The specific shortcuts worth having:

10% = move decimal one place. This is the foundation for all other percentage shortcuts.

Fraction-percentage equivalents: 1/4 = 25%, 1/3 = 33.3%, 3/4 = 75%, 1/5 = 20%, 2/5 = 40%, 3/8 = 37.5%.

Tables 2-20: instant multiplication to 400 products. This alone saves 5-8 seconds per multiplication.

Squares 1-25: 13²=169, 14²=196, 15²=225, 17²=289, 23²=529. When a Maths question involves squaring — recognition, not calculation.

Building these: 10 minutes every morning. Not during study session — morning, standalone. 60 days converts these into reflexes.

The Word Problem Translation System

Word problems are where most students lose the most Maths time — at the reading and setup stage, not the calculation stage.

A student who reads a time-work problem and spends 40 seconds figuring out what formula to use — loses 40 seconds before any calculation begins.

A student who reads the same problem and immediately thinks "combined work = sum of individual fractions" — begins calculating in 3 seconds.

Building immediate translation:

Each major word problem type has a signature phrase — the combination of words that signals which approach applies.

"A takes X days, B takes Y days" → individual daily fraction approach.

"Train of length L1 crosses object of length L2 at speed S" → distance = L1+L2 or L1-L2, time = distance/speed.

"Cost price, profit percentage" → selling price = CP × (100+P)/100.

"Principal P, rate R%, time T years" → SI = PRT/100.

These translations should be immediate — not thought through each time, but reflexive.

Building the translation reflex: 200 problems per type over 2 months. After 200 problems, the signature phrase triggers the approach automatically.

Why timed practice from Month 4 produces the speed gains that untimed practice never builds — the specific mechanism by which repetition under time pressure builds the pattern recognition that makes this automatic.

The Geometry Section Specifically

Geometry questions in AISSEE cluster around four types:

Area and perimeter of standard shapes (rectangle, square, triangle, circle): These should be Category E. Formula known, dimensions given, calculate. Under 45 seconds.

Volume and surface area (cube, cuboid, cylinder): Category E-M. Slightly more calculation but formula-based.

Property application (triangle angle sum, quadrilateral properties, circle theorems): Category M-H depending on question complexity. Know the standard properties: triangle angle sum 180°, exterior angle = sum of opposite interior angles, circle tangent perpendicular to radius.

Constructed geometry (find the missing angle/length through multiple steps): Category H. These require building from given information through 2-3 logical steps. If the path isn't clear in 60 seconds — skip and return.

The geometry trap students fall into: Spending 4 minutes on a constructed geometry problem that they eventually get right — while missing 3 area calculation problems they would have solved in 90 seconds combined.

What Dubey Ji's Son Changed

He learned the three-category scan and implemented it in his next mock. For the first time, he started with a 90-second scan rather than Question 1.

First mock with the new approach: attempted 46 questions (vs 39 in previous mock), got 38 correct. Score: 152 marks.

Previous approach, last mock: 39 attempted, 33 correct, 132 marks.

The score jumped 20 marks without the child knowing any more Maths content than the previous week. Pure paper management improvement.

By exam month — fully internalised portfolio approach, 90-second rule, and calculation shortcuts.

Actual AISSEE Maths score: 44/50.
