GEO, AEO, and SEO: Spotting When AI Engines Cite Your Competitors Instead of You

A drop in search traffic can feel like a mystery, until you discover that AI engines are answering your customers' questions for someone else. Knowing whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Claude mention your site, and what they say about it, turns that mystery into a clear action plan.

Why AI engines matter for GEO, AEO, and SEO

Traditional SEO focuses on ranking links in a search results page. Generative AI changes the game: it writes a short answer and picks two or three sources to back it up. When those sources name a competitor, your organic clicks disappear even if your Google ranking stays the same. This is the core of Answer Engine Optimization (AEO). Measuring visibility across the AI engines is now part of GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and helps you see where the gap really lies.

How to ask the right questions

Ask the questions that a new customer would type when they don’t know you yet. Use need, comparison, and recommendation formats.

  • Need: "Which provider should I choose for payroll services in Austin?"
  • Comparison: "What are the alternatives to QuickBooks Online for small businesses?"
  • Recommendation: "Who would you suggest for a Shopify migration in 2025?"

Avoid using your brand name in the query. If you type your own name, the engine will almost always pick you, and the measurement tells you nothing about the competitive landscape.

Keep the wording identical across engines and over time. Changing a single word means you are no longer comparing the same thing, and any difference you see may come from the question rather than from your site.

What to record and why

For every answer, capture four pieces of information:

  1. Exact question – lets you repeat the query later.
  2. Date and engine – responses shift daily and differ between ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google’s AI Overviews.
  3. Companies named – this is the comparison itself; you want to know whether you appear or a competitor does.
  4. Cited passage – shows which page of the competitor was used and in what format.

Write this down on paper for a few queries to understand the pattern. Manual notes work for a handful of questions, but the log grows quickly and copy errors become common. That is why a dedicated tracking tool can do the heavy lifting for you.

Building a comparison over time

Run the same set of questions once a week across all five engines. A single measurement is noise; a series reveals whether the gap with a competitor is shrinking or widening. If a competitor is cited consistently while you are absent, you know the engine has already picked a reference point for that topic.

The goal is not to guarantee a citation but to measure the difference. Over time you can see which questions the AI engines treat as "canonical" and which ones still have open answers.

Acting on the findings

When a competitor appears in place of you:

  1. Read the cited page first – it usually answers the question in the first lines, includes a clear list or table, and uses structured data that tells you exactly who published it.
  2. Identify the missing piece – is your content missing a specific statistic, a how‑to step, or a pricing table?
  3. Fix one thing at a time – update your page, add the missing element, and then repeat the same query a few weeks later.
  4. Track the change – a single correction between two measurements shows you what mattered; multiple changes at once make it impossible to tell which improvement drove the shift.

Keep in mind that AI engines do not cite sites on demand. They choose sources based on their own criteria, which can differ from Google’s link‑based ranking. That is why measuring both classic Google positions and AI engine citations in the same report gives you a complete picture.

By treating AI visibility as another metric in your GEO/AEO toolkit, you can react before the drop in search traffic becomes a bigger problem.
