SudokuNova v0.2.1: Improving the Windows Desktop Experience with Kotlin
SudokuNova v0.2.1 is now available on GitHub!
This release is a focused maintenance update designed to make the Windows desktop experience more convenient, improve native application integration, and strengthen installation packaging.
SudokuNova is an open-source, offline-first Sudoku application built using Kotlin and Compose Multiplatform.
Why this release matters
Building a cross-platform application involves more than sharing business logic and rendering the same interface everywhere.
Each platform has different expectations for window behavior, menus, keyboard shortcuts, installation, and application integration.
With v0.2.1, the focus is on improving these desktop-specific details without replacing the shared Sudoku gameplay foundation.
What's new?
1. Native desktop menus
SudokuNova now provides native Game and Help menus.
The Game menu includes actions for creating a puzzle, undoing a move, toggling notes, requesting a hint, resetting a puzzle, and exiting the application.
The Help menu provides access to the developer website and source repository.
2. Keyboard shortcuts
Windows players can use:
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Ctrl+N | New puzzle |
| Ctrl+Z | Undo move |
| Ctrl+M | Toggle notes |
| Ctrl+H | Hint |
On macOS, the corresponding Command-key shortcuts are supported.
3. Better desktop window behavior
The default desktop window opens at a more comfortable size and remains resizable.
The shared layout continues adapting to different window widths.
4. Improved Windows installer
The Windows MSI package now includes:
- Per-user installation support.
- Installation-directory selection.
- A named Start-menu group.
- A stable upgrade identifier for future versions.
- Automated verification of important MSI metadata.
One upgrade detail is worth mentioning: because v0.2.0 did not use the same explicit upgrade identifier, direct MSI upgrades from that version are not guaranteed. The release documentation explains the recommended upgrade precautions.
5. Release engineering
The release workflow builds and verifies packages for multiple targets.
The published release includes Windows, macOS, and Linux desktop packages, along with WebAssembly distribution files and development/testing artifacts.
Android's included debug APK is intended for testing, while the iOS simulator framework is for development rather than direct device installation.
What's next?
My focus is continuing to improve SudokuNova's desktop usability, cross-platform development, testing, accessibility, and overall player experience.
Feedback from users and contributors is an important part of this process.
