Security Checks Worth Adding to a Python API Early

Security is easier to consider during development than to retrofit after an application grows. Even a small Python API benefits from a few basic practices:
Validate incoming data rather than trusting client input.
Keep API keys and credentials out of source code.
Apply authentication and authorization where needed.
Avoid exposing sensitive details in error messages or logs.
Test how the application handles malformed requests and unexpected failures.
AI-enabled applications introduce additional concerns, including prompt injection, sensitive information in retrieved documents, and unintended tool access. Those risks need to be considered alongside ordinary application security.

For developers building these skills through projects, Full-Stack Python For AI Developers explores Python, application development, and AI implementation.

Which security practice do you think should be introduced earliest in a developer's learning journey?
