SEO, GEO, and AEO are often used as if they mean the same thing. They don't.
They describe three connected ways people find and encounter your brand.
SEO helps your pages rank in traditional search results.
GEO helps your brand get mentioned or cited in AI-generated answers.
AEO helps your content become the direct answer in AI Overviews and voice search.
Each needs a different focus.
SEO: Useful pages, search intent, and relevant keywords.
GEO: Clear facts, credible sources, and information others reference.
AEO: Concise answers and content that addresses questions directly.
Each also needs a different measurement approach:
• Rankings and organic clicks for SEO.
• Brand mentions and citations for GEO.
• Answer visibility and appearances for AEO.
These are not competing strategies. They work together.
A strong search presence means showing up wherever your audience looks for answers.
Which one is getting the most attention in your strategy?

The measurement distinction matters as much as the content distinction. A page can gain traditional rankings without appearing in answer experiences, and an AI mention can be unreliable if the underlying facts are not maintained. I would make source ownership part of the framework: each concise answer should have a canonical page, a review date, and evidence a business can update when prices, availability, or policies change.
