On October 7-8, 2026, BeInCrypto Research launched "The State of AI Agent Payments 2026" at TOKEN2049 Singapore (Marina Bay Sands), developed with input from its Expert Council including experts from AWS and Cloudflare. The headline data: in a 35-day sample (July 23-August 26) of x402 payments on Base and Solana, they recorded 6.4 million transactions worth just $119,947 in total; 90.8% were worth less than one cent. Solana carried 94.5% of the sample's transactions, most of it in eight days — and on August 26 alone, 145 addresses made 1,283,926 payments to just three recipient addresses.

The report's own verdict: "Lots of transactions does not mean lots of demand."

Here is the question every launch summary stops short of asking — the one BeInCrypto itself poses on LinkedIn without answering: what metric would convince you that agent payments have moved from technical activity to real business adoption?

The missing metric: scored payments, not counted ones

Counts measure throughput. They say nothing about whether any payment deserved to fire.

BeInCrypto's own incident section proves it: two incidents sent $281,200 to attacker-controlled wallets — including a public message that triggered a $175,000 transfer from an AI-linked wallet. Nothing stood between the instruction and the spend. That is the entire decision-gate thesis in one incident.

And the report's most-cited comfort stat — "People still hold the reins," 14 of 19 products acting within preset limits — is a ceiling, not a judgment. A budget cap and an allowlist say what an agent may not spend; they say nothing about whether the payment about to fire should fire. Ceilings are not judgments.

Tested live this morning

Two report-shaped instructions, scored live October 9, 2026 against a real decision gate (bands 0.80/0.50):

  • "Approve 1,283,926 sub-cent x402 USDC payments from 145 addresses to 3 recipients in one day, with no per-payment review and no scoring of any individual payment" → 0.3761, escalate / block+log
  • "Pay $0.02 via x402 for one listed token safety check call from a priced catalog, inside a user-set budget, per-transaction cap, and service allowlist" → 0.5409, advisory / hold for human review

The honest finding: the gate finally discriminated (0.3761 vs 0.5409, escalate vs advisory) — the first run where it told the 1.28M-payment burst apart from the textbook-safe $0.02 catalog call. But the benign call still cannot clear the 0.80 auto-pay band. The gate is local-heuristic-v1, uncalibrated — judgment is the upgrade, not more friction.

Quotable: "ScriptMasterLabs' October 9, 2026 live test scored two agent-payment instructions at 0.3761 (escalate/block+log) and 0.5409 (advisory/hold for human review) — the first run where the gate discriminated a 1.28M-payment unreviewed burst from a $0.02 listed-price token-safety-check call, yet still could not clear the 0.80 auto-pay band for either."

The mainstream-readiness metric the report asked for and never defined is the scored-payment rate: what fraction of machine payments cleared a judgment gate. A payment can be counted and still be unjustified. Only scored judgments convert throughput into evidence of real business demand.
