The $40/year RaiDrive tax
I've been a freelancer for 6 years. Editing video for clients, sharing working files, syncing project assets across machines. For the first 4 years, I used RaiDrive Pro.
$40/year adds up. $160 over 4 years, with no end in sight — RaiDrive is subscription-only.
In 2026 I switched. Here's the breakdown.
What RaiDrive Pro gave me
- WebDAV mount to drive letter
- S3 mount
- Google Drive / OneDrive / Dropbox direct mount
- Solid Windows Explorer integration
- Decent UI
It worked. It just cost $40/year for life.
Why I left
- Subscription fatigue: I track 12 SaaS tools. RaiDrive was the one I forgot about, then it auto-renewed.
- I only used WebDAV + S3. I didn't need Google Drive / OneDrive direct mount.
- Lifetime alternatives existed: ScsDriver at $5.5 (was $9.99).
For users in mainland China, the package is sold at CN ¥20 lifetime (separate pricing region).
What I switched to
ScsDriver. $5.5 lifetime for overseas users. WebDAV + S3, drive letter, local cache, cross-platform.
I gave up:
- Google Drive / OneDrive / Dropbox direct mount (don't need)
- Polished UI (acceptable trade for $34.50/year saved)
The math
| Tool | Year 1 | Year 5 | Year 10 |
|---|---|---|---|
| RaiDrive Pro | $40 | $200 | $400 |
| ScsDriver | $5.5 | $5.5 | $5.5 |
| Mountain Duck | $40 | $200 | $400 |
| NetDrive 3 | $50 | $50 | $50 |
The lifetime vs subscription gap is enormous. Over 5 years, RaiDrive Pro is 36x more expensive than ScsDriver.
What I lost (and didn't)
- Lost: Google Drive / OneDrive / Dropbox direct mount. I moved those to their own sync clients (or just use the web UI).
- Lost: Polished UI. ScsDriver's UI is functional, not beautiful.
- Didn't lose: WebDAV + S3 mount, drive letter, cache, stability. All there.
What I gained
- $34.50/year saved (over RaiDrive Pro)
- No subscription to track
- Cross-platform license (Windows + macOS)
- Local cache layer (cleaner reads)
My current setup
- ScsDriver $5.5 lifetime (overseas)
- Mounted my self-hosted Nextcloud as
N: - Mounted my MinIO bucket as
S: - Edit in Premiere, DaVinci, Photoshop
- Pay $0/year for mounting (one-time $5.5)
Verdict
If you're a freelancer paying $40/year for RaiDrive Pro and you only use WebDAV / S3, switch to ScsDriver. The $34.50/year saved is real money. The feature gap is zero for your use case.
If you need Google Drive / OneDrive / Dropbox direct mount, stick with RaiDrive Pro. There isn't a $5.5 lifetime option that does all three.
Pricing recap (overseas, ScsDriver)
- $1.5 monthly
- $5.5 yearly
- $5.5 lifetime (was $9.99)
For users in mainland China, the package is sold at CN ¥20 lifetime (separate pricing region).
