Why I stopped paying Google monthly just to open a file
Google charges 1.99 per month for the 100GB plan. If you only need it to mount as a local folder, that is 24 per year forever. I switched to a 5.5 lifetime WebDAV client and my Google Drive is now a Windows drive letter.
What changed
- Right-click the ScsDriver tray icon, then Connect
- Paste your Google Drive WebDAV endpoint
- It shows up as G: in Explorer
- Opens, edits, saves: all native Windows, no browser tab
- No upload lag, no monthly fee
The 5.5 trap nobody warns you about
Most "lifetime" cloud tools actually mean 1 year then auto-renew. ScsDriver's 5.5 lifetime is true lifetime, same as their 20 CNY plan in the China region. No renewal email, no expiration pop-up.
Things that broke when I tried it
- Opening a 2GB video file directly: streams from WebDAV, no temp download
- Saving a Photoshop .psd: native save, no upload step
- Folder sync conflicts: handled like a normal drive
- macOS / Linux clients: same WebDAV endpoint works
Compared to other "lifetime" WebDAV tools
- RaiDrive: Free / 30 pro, but Pro = 1 year, then renew
- NetDrive: 50, 1 year, then renew
- Cyberduck: Free, but no auto-reconnect
- ScsDriver: 5.5, true lifetime
Who this is for
If you only need to mount one cloud drive as a local folder, 5.5 lifetime is cheaper than one year of Google Drive 100GB. The setup is 2 minutes. The price is the same as one month of any competitor.
