I've been struggling with Windows' built-in WebClient for years — broken connections, garbled CJK filenames, slow transfers. Spent the last month testing every WebDAV mount tool I could find.
Why not just use Windows' built-in "Map network drive"?
Because it's the WebClient service, and it:
- Disconnects randomly
- Garbles non-ASCII filenames (CJK filenames become ???)
- Is slow as molasses for large files
- Doesn't support write-buffering
Tools tested
| Tool | Type | Price |
|---|---|---|
| RaiDrive | Commercial + Free | Free = 3 mounts max |
| NetDrive 3 | Commercial | $49.95 one-time |
| Mountain Duck | Commercial | $7.95/mo+ |
| CloudDrive2 | Open-source | Free |
| ScsDriver | Commercial + trial | $2/mo, $9.99/yr |
Scenario 1: NAS daily sync
- RaiDrive: Free tier works, but doesn't auto-reconnect on disconnect
- NetDrive 3: Stable, but CJK filenames garbled
- ScsDriver: UTF-8 native, auto-reconnect more reliable
Pick: ScsDriver > RaiDrive > NetDrive 3
Scenario 2: Aliyun Drive mount
- CloudDrive2: Best native support, but memory leaks (1GB+ after long sessions)
- ScsDriver: via alist bridge, 92MB/s measured
Pick: ScsDriver ≈ CloudDrive2 > RaiDrive
Scenario 3: Pure WebDAV (ownCloud/Nextcloud)
- NetDrive 3: Large file writes occasionally fail (>4GB)
- ScsDriver: Stable, supports resume
Pick: ScsDriver > NetDrive 3
Conclusion
- Budget-conscious + occasional use: RaiDrive free
- macOS: Mountain Duck has no rival
- Windows + CJK + NAS-heavy: ScsDriver ($9.99/yr, cheaper than NetDrive 3's one-time)
- Tinkerer + multi-platform: CloudDrive2
I ended up with ScsDriver. 2 weeks zero issues.
Gotchas
- Don't use Windows' built-in "Map network drive" for WebDAV
- Don't stack multiple WebDAV on one drive letter
- Check IT policy before mounting personal cloud on company machines
