Boredom Is the Doorway You Keep Slamming Shut

The moment it gets dull,
your hand reaches for the phone.

You don't even decide to.

The work got hard,
or slow,
or quiet,
and the reflex fired
before the thought arrived.

That reflex is the enemy of depth.

Because the boring stretch
is not a wall.

It is the doorway.

Every hard problem
has a dull middle,
the part with no dopamine,
where the interesting beginning is gone
and the satisfying end
is still far off.

That middle is where the work is.

And it is exactly where
you have trained yourself to flee.

Every time you escape the boredom,
you practice escaping.

The habit gets stronger.
Your tolerance gets weaker.
Soon you cannot sit
with anything unresolved
for more than a minute
without reaching to fill it.

That is not a character flaw.

It is a trained reflex,
and anything trained
can be trained back.

So the next time it gets boring,
do nothing.

Stay.
Let it be dull.
Feel the pull to escape
and simply do not.

The discomfort peaks
and then it passes,
and on the other side of it
is the state you have been missing:

the deep, quiet place
where hard things actually get solved.

You cannot reach it
without crossing the boredom.

There is no tunnel around.

The people who do deep work
are not more gifted with focus.

They are just more willing
to be bored
for a little longer than you are.

That is the whole edge.

So stop treating boredom
as a signal to leave.

Treat it as a signal you arrived
at the part that matters,
the part everyone else abandoned.

Sit in the dull middle.

Keep your hand off the escape.

The door only opens
for the one who waits
in the boring room
long enough to see it.
