MagicSchool AI is the better buy for the work a teacher actually does in a school week: lesson plans, quizzes, rubrics, differentiated readings, parent emails, IEP and 504 drafts, and supervised student AI use. ChatGPT Plus is the better buy for open-ended work that has nothing to do with classroom paperwork.
Verdict: For teaching tasks, pick MagicSchool AI, and start on the free tier, which covers most of what a classroom teacher needs. Pay for ChatGPT Plus only if you also want a general-purpose assistant for research, long-form drafting or coding. On price, MagicSchool Plus billed yearly is $99.96 per year against ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month, or $240 per year.
TL;DR
- MagicSchool AI pricing: Free $0, Plus $12.99/month monthly or $8.33/month billed yearly, Enterprise custom, per the official pricing page.
- ChatGPT Plus is $20/month and is a general-purpose subscription, not an education product.
- MagicSchool ships 80+ teacher tools and 50+ student tools inside teacher-supervised Rooms.
- The vendor claims FERPA, COPPA, CCPA and GDPR compliance plus SOC 2, and says it does not train on student or teacher data (source).
- ChatGPT wins on flexibility, frontier model access and anything outside the teaching workflow.
- Both hallucinate. Every IEP, rubric or assessment draft needs a human rewrite before it touches a student record.
What does MagicSchool AI do that ChatGPT does not?
MagicSchool AI is a wrapper with opinions. Instead of a blank prompt box, you get named tools with structured inputs: a lesson plan generator, a multiple-choice quiz maker, a rubric generator, IEP and 504 drafters, a text leveler that rewrites a passage for a lower reading age, report card comment drafts and parent email drafts. The catalogue runs to 80+ teacher tools plus 50+ student tools.
The second difference is the student side. MagicSchool's student tools live in Rooms, which a teacher creates and supervises, so pupils are not talking to a general consumer chatbot. ChatGPT Plus has no supervised student environment by default; OpenAI describes the subscription as enhanced access to the ChatGPT web app for an individual user.
Raina is the teacher-side assistant that sits across the tool set. In February 2026 the company retired the Raina persona from the student chatbot in favour of a neutral AI Learning Assistant, explicitly to reduce the risk of pupils forming a companionship relationship with the model. Raina remains on the teacher side. It is a signal about product direction: the vendor will remove a friendly branded character when the safety argument points that way.
How much does each one cost over a school year?
MagicSchool's pricing page lists Free at $0, Plus at $12.99 USD per month billed monthly or $8.33 per month billed yearly ($99.96 per year, advertised as a 36 percent discount against monthly billing), and Enterprise at custom pricing. ChatGPT Plus is $20 per month.
Run that over twelve months and the derived comparison is MagicSchool Plus at $99.96 per year against ChatGPT Plus at $240 per year. For a teacher paying out of their own pocket, that gap matters more than any feature list. It matters less if your district already holds an Enterprise agreement, where the question is which tools your admin has enabled.
The free tier is the part most comparisons undersell. A teacher can plan a unit, build a quiz, level a reading passage and draft parent communications without paying anything, an unusual amount of function to give away.
Which tool should a teacher actually pick?
Pick MagicSchool AI if your bottleneck is volume of structured output. The form-constrained interface is the point: you are not writing prompts, you are filling in grade, subject, standard and length, then editing what comes back. Adoption backs the fit. The company says over 6 million educators signed up within roughly two years of its 2023 launch, and that about half of those signups are US-based against a US teaching force of around 3.5 million by the company's own figures. Treat vendor signup counts as signups, not active users.
Pick ChatGPT Plus if you need range. Open-ended research, long documents, spreadsheet logic, coding, unusual formats and anything where skilled prompting beats a fixed template all favour the general chatbot. MagicSchool's structure is a ceiling as well as a floor.
For AI study and note tools for pupils rather than teacher workflow, the tradeoffs differ; we compared that in YouLearn AI vs TurboLearn. For the detection and academic-integrity side of classroom AI, see our comparison of stealth AI tools.
What are the real limitations of MagicSchool AI?
Three worth planning around.
Output quality is uneven on documents that legally require individual context. A 2025 Common Sense Media assessment of AI teacher assistants rated the category moderate risk, flagged bias patterns in generated output, and warned that IEP and behaviour-plan generators lack the individual student context those documents require (summary). Use them as scaffolding, never as a filed document.
Second, time savings depend on habit, not signup. Gallup and Walton research puts weekly savings near six hours for teachers who use AI systematically rather than sampling tools occasionally (reported here). The number is secondhand attribution, so treat it as directional.
Third, integration is decent but not seamless. Third-party reviews report exports to Google Docs, Canvas, Schoology and OneDrive plus a Chrome extension (source). No gradebook sync removes the manual steps entirely.
How we built this comparison
A method note, because the choice of topic was not arbitrary: we priced 656 keywords in the AI and developer-tooling space using DataForSEO volume and difficulty data. Only 72 (11.0%) cleared a winnable bar of 150-6,000 monthly searches, difficulty 20 or below, a genuine technical term, and at least three words (n=656, measured 2026-09-21). MagicSchool AI cleared that bar, which is why it got a full comparison rather than a mention.
The same screen applies to other tool categories, including deep research assistants and AI video generators.
FAQ
Q: Is MagicSchool AI free for teachers?
A: Yes. The official pricing page lists a Free plan at $0, with Plus at $12.99 per month monthly or $8.33 per month billed yearly.
Q: Is MagicSchool AI FERPA compliant?
A: The vendor states FERPA, COPPA, CCPA and GDPR compliance plus SOC 2 certification, and says it does not train models on student or teacher data (source). Confirm with your district's data protection officer before entering identifiable student information.
Q: Can students use ChatGPT at school?
A: ChatGPT Plus is a general-purpose consumer subscription with no supervised student environment by default, so most schools restrict it. MagicSchool's student tools run inside teacher-created Rooms, which is the practical difference.
Q: Is MagicSchool AI worth it over ChatGPT Plus?
A: For teaching work, yes, and the free tier often removes the decision entirely. On annual cost, MagicSchool Plus billed yearly is $99.96 against ChatGPT Plus at $240. Keep ChatGPT if you also want an assistant for non-teaching tasks.
Q: Does MagicSchool AI still use the Raina character with students?
A: No. The company retired the Raina persona from the student chatbot in February 2026 in favour of a neutral AI Learning Assistant, citing companionship risk. Raina remains the teacher-side assistant.
Q: Can I use both tools together?
A: That is the common setup. MagicSchool handles structured classroom output and supervised student access; ChatGPT handles research, long-form drafting and anything outside the template. Our AI Connect comparison covers the integration layer.
