this blog is about a chrome extension i built to address a major bookmark problem.
the inspiration:
i guess as developers or non-developer we all have faced that scenario where more than 10 tabs are open in your browser and in reality you're only using either 1 or 2. the "inactive" tabs just lie there taking up the computer memory and create uneasiness in your mind.
till now , there used to be this constant overwhelming feeling anytime i'd look at the inactive tabs. and i remember speaking to myself "i wish i could just save and store these tabs into a list and set an alarm that would just remind me to actually visit this website later as per my preferred time".
well i made that wish come true - i built this chrome extension read in a bit so you can actually browse these sites later along with bookmarking them as we all know what happens when we bookmark something for later and the "later" never comes
so this extension can be thought of as a bookmark reminder!
all of the information like installation, technical details can be found here read in a bit
a little demo for you shared here:
sources, technologies, references used to build this project:
- official Chrome developer documentation
- built in html, css, javascript. the styling is very minimal with no fancy buttons. (you can tell im not really into front-end :))i'm open to suggestions and if you'd like to add new features create a PR and i will merge.
- extension logo from: https://uxwing.com/
- alarm, trash icons: https://www.flaticon.com/
- guidance, mentor help: chatgpt
little heart to heart
This is my first time building something on my own and trust me there were days where i just wanted to give up, as i was stuck on a problem for more than 1-2 days. But proper planning, structured layout helped many times. One thing i knew that once completed this will help many people as it a common issue to bookmark and never visit that app/website again.
At one point I was so hinged and excited that I spent entire two days without any rest and it was just me and my laptop. and i felt sick afterwards. xD
As it is published now i feel beyond excited and proud that i didn't give up on this and completed it as i wished.
One major thing i realized by building this project - action does give you confidence. And action happens when you try. if you keep whining you'll get nowhere. Instead channel that energy into something you deeply care about, build things, break them and learn as you go.
Someone said it right - amazing things happen just after when you're about to give up.
One thing i also reminded myself when i felt like leaving - big companies today like google, apple, would't be standing today if their founders gave up. few years back i could never build such projects because i made myself believe that it is not possible , it requires such and such technology, this & that.
oh i was so wrong!
remember sweetie, nothing is impossible unless you believe it to be
plus its good to try out new things!
alright that's enough motivation for today. i might see some tear drops here and there. so if you have something you've been delaying work on it now!
i hope you found this blog interesting to read. if you are still here thank you from the bottom of my heart. <3
ending notes
one thing if i can ask you - if you think this project might prove to be helpful for you or even someone else and you wish to show your appreciation then you can do so by either forking or starring the project over github.
it 'd mean a lot! i'd be highly obliged. 🙏
