This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine
What I Built
Meet PHANTOM CLI, a spooky AI-powered terminal companion that brings a little supernatural personality to everyday development workflows.
Inspired by the idea of a forgotten programmer whose spirit lives inside an abandoned computer, PHANTOM CLI transforms an ordinary terminal into an interactive experience.
It can:
- React to terminal commands with mysterious and humorous commentary.
- Explain Linux commands in a beginner-friendly way.
- Generate creepy responses based on user interactions.
- Answer programming questions while staying in character.
- Operate locally without sending conversations to external AI services.
Whether you're running ls, checking system information, or exploring your development environment, there's always a chance the ghost has something to say.
Demo
A short demonstration of PHANTOM CLI running locally will showcase its interactive terminal experience.

How I Built It
PHANTOM CLI is designed around Llama 3.2 3B, an open-weight language model running locally through Ollama.
The planned technology stack includes:
- Python: Core application and terminal interaction.
- Ollama: Local model execution and inference.
- Llama 3.2 3B: The AI powering the ghost's personality and responses.
- Linux Terminal: The environment where the experience comes alive.
The application uses a custom system prompt to give the model a mysterious personality, allowing it to behave like a forgotten programmer who has returned from the digital afterlife.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation makes PHANTOM CLI possible without depending on expensive proprietary AI APIs.
Using an open-weight model through Ollama provides several advantages:
- Privacy: Conversations remain on the local machine.
- Accessibility: No paid AI API subscription is required.
- Independence: The application can operate without an internet connection once the model is installed.
- Flexibility: Developers can experiment with different models, prompts, and behaviours.
- Ownership: The underlying AI experience isn't entirely dependent on a third-party service.
For me, the most exciting part is being able to experiment with AI without needing permission from a cloud-based service.
The ghost belongs in the machine, and the machine belongs to us.
My Agent Session
Agent development session: Coming soon.
The Spirit of It
Halloween is usually about ghosts hiding in dark places.
But what if one was hiding inside your terminal?
PHANTOM CLI explores that idea while celebrating the creativity and freedom that open-source AI gives developers.
Sometimes, the most interesting thing about a machine isn't what you put into it, but what you imagine might already be living inside it.
