This is a submission for the 2025 Hacktoberfest Writing Challenge: Open Source Reflections
October 2025 will always be special to me - it marked my first real step into the open-source world.
Last year, I registered for Hacktoberfest but never made it past the sign-up page. Between exams, deadlines, and self-doubt, open source felt like a world I'd join "someday."
This year, I finally decided to stop overthinking and start contributing - and wow, what a ride! I made 6 pull requests, created forks, and even earned the Super Contributor badge, joining the top 10,000 contributors who'll get the iconic Hacktoberfest shirt.
But beyond badges and swag, this experience taught me something deeper - open source is not just about code; it’s about community, learning, and helping each other grow. Every "small" fix you make contributes to something much bigger.
What Open Source Taught Me
Before Hacktoberfest, open source was just "code on GitHub."
Now, it means collaboration, mentorship, and growth.
Community over code: Every feedback comment, review, and suggestion shaped me as a developer.
Learning through contribution: I learned more from PR reviews than many structured tutorials.
Giving back: Knowing my code could help learners worldwide felt incredibly rewarding.
Lessons I’ll Never Forget
- Start small, aim big. Small PRs are stepping stones to meaningful ones.
- Clarity beats complexity. Clean, well-documented code always wins.
- Ask, discuss, improve. Communication builds better software (and friendships).
- Perfection is overrated. Progress matters more.
- Read before you code. Understanding the repo is half the work done.
My Advice for Future Participants
- Don’t wait until October - learn Git and GitHub early.
- Look for good first issue tags - they’re made for you.
- Focus on quality, not just numbers.
- Join discussions; open source thrives on human connection.
- Keep notes - your October log becomes your November confidence.
