Imagine you're hiring a ceramics worker to lay tiles...

Imagine you're hiring a ceramics worker to lay tiles in your bathroom. Would you only hire someone who can lay red tiles or someone who can lay tiles of different colors and patterns? Similarly, in the IT industry, it's crucial to look beyond tool-specific skills and seek out candidates who possess versatility, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities.

I've seen many job postings in the IT industry that require specific tool-specific skills. While it's important to have proficiency in certain tools or technologies, hiring solely based on that criterion may limit your pool of candidates and overlook other important qualities that can contribute to the success of your team.

When hiring for a specific tool or technology, you may miss out on potential candidates who have a diverse skill set that can be applied to different situations. A candidate who is proficient in one tool may struggle to adapt when faced with a new tool or technology, whereas a candidate who has a broader understanding of IT concepts and principles can quickly learn and adapt to new tools.
