Building an AI Document Extraction Pipeline with DocuSense

PDFs and scanned documents contain a huge amount of valuable information, but extracting that information reliably is still a challenge.

A developer may receive an invoice, bank statement, tax document or contract and need to transform it into structured data that can be consumed by an application.

This is the problem I wanted to solve with DocuSense.

What is DocuSense?

DocuSense is an AI-powered document processing platform and REST API designed to extract structured data from documents.

The basic workflow is:

Document
↓
Upload
↓
Document Classification
↓
AI Processing
↓
Data Extraction
↓
Validation
↓
Structured JSON
↓
Your Application

Instead of simply returning the text contained in a PDF, the objective is to return information that applications can actually use.

Supported document types

DocuSense can process different categories of documents, including:

  • Invoices
  • Bank statements
  • Pay stubs
  • Canadian T4 documents
  • Quebec RL-1 documents
  • ROE documents
  • W-2
  • P45 / P60
  • Tax documents
  • Contracts
  • Financial documents
  • Custom document types

Custom extraction is particularly useful when the document doesn't belong to one of the predefined categories.

You can define the fields you want to extract and use the resulting structured data inside your own application.

Why an API?

One of the main goals of DocuSense is to make document intelligence easy to integrate into existing applications.

For example:

Your application

This makes it possible to integrate document processing into:

  • Accounting applications
  • ERP systems
  • CRM platforms
  • Financial applications
  • HR systems
  • SaaS products
  • Internal automation tools
  • Webhooks and automation

Document processing often happens asynchronously.

Instead of continuously polling an API, applications can use webhooks to receive notifications when processing is completed.

This makes it possible to build workflows such as:

Going beyond OCR

OCR is useful when the objective is to extract text.

But modern document processing often requires more than text recognition.

A useful document processing pipeline may need to understand:

  • Document type
  • Fields
  • Relationships between fields
  • Tables
  • Transactions
  • Dates
  • Amounts
  • Entities
  • Confidence
  • Validation rules

This is where Document AI becomes more interesting than traditional OCR.

Document intelligence and RAG

Another direction I'm exploring with DocuSense is intelligent document search.

A potential architecture looks like:

Documents
↓
Chunking
↓
Embeddings
↓
Vector Database
↓
Hybrid Search
↓
RAG
↓
Answer + Citations

This architecture can allow users to ask questions about large collections of documents while keeping the generated answers connected to the original sources.

What I'm interested in hearing from developers

There are many possible applications for document intelligence.

I'm particularly interested in use cases involving:

  • Financial documents
  • Accounting automation
  • Tax documents
  • Invoices
  • Banking
  • Compliance
  • Contracts
  • AI-powered document search

What types of documents are you currently processing manually?

And what would you automate first if you had a reliable document extraction API?
