*How to solve Adobe Acrobat DC error 10001-unable to process the page because the paper capture recognition service experienced an error *
Recently, many users of Adobe Acrobat DC have been seeing the error when trying to use the optical capture recognition (OCR) function, which is also referred to as page recognition to edit pdfs that are either scanned files or images.
There are currently few solutions online that actually work, for a good reason we will discuss shortly. We understand that this error is particularly frustrating. Although there are many alternatives for viewing pdfs (modern browsers such as chrome and Firefox is sufficient to simply read and print out pdfs), PDF editing that supports not only plain text editing but also editing imbedded texts on graphics, which is one of Acrobat DC’s most praised features, is less available. In this tutorial, we are going to provide some fixes that may help you solve this issue.
Before we begin, you need to understand that page recognition (OCR) is a web-based service, unlike other functions in Acrobat DC, it requires internet connection.
1. Make sure you are using the newest version of Acrobat DC
By this, I don’t mean you have to use adobe acrobat DC 2022, however, versions released before 2018 are unlikely to work because they use an outdated communication method called Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.0/1.1, which Adobe has since deprecated. Please consider updating your software if you have a version of Acrobat DC from before 2018, inclusive. If it still doesn’t work, don’t worry, try the steps below.
2. Make sure you are connected to the internet
As I said, page recognition (OCR) is a web-based service. You do need internet connection to access it. Issue can be potentially caused by internet interruption.
3. Copy and paste a few files that may be missing around
Sometimes, the error 10001 can be resolved by move the missing files to locations where they are needed. Missing files is possibly caused by an incomplete update, system error, or a computer virus.
Simply follow the steps below, remember to substitute any with your actual software version. Here is how you find your software version. How to find out your Adobe Acrobat DC version
- Go to the location: a. C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe<Acrobat Version>\Acrobat\plug_ins\PaperCapture\iDRS15 b. For example, for Acrobat DC, go to: c. C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat DC\Acrobat\plug_ins\PaperCapture\iDRS15 d.
Copy all the files in the folder.
Go to the following location and paste the copied files:
a. C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe<Acrobat Version>\Acrobat\plug_ins\PaperCaptureGo to the location mentioned in Step 1, and copy all the files again.
Go to the following location and paste the copied files:
a. C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe<Acrobat Version>\Acrobat\plug_ins
4. Repair you installation with your installer
if copying and pasting a few files that may be missing around doesn’t work, you may have a corrupt installation. As it can be very hard to find out exactly what went wrong, your best bet is to repair your installation with your installer. Just run the installer as you did when installing Acrobat DC, then select repair from the drop-down menu.

5. Uninstall and reinstall Adobe Acrobat DC
If your attempt to repair doesn’t work, it’s time to try the nuclear option. Run the installer again and select uninstall Acrobat DC this time, then restart your PC as prompted. Wait a few minutes and re-install Acrobat DC using the same installer. Check to see if this resolved the issue.

6. You may need a subscription
If even the nuclear option failed to eliminate this annoying error for you, it may be time to face the reality: you may need a subscription with Adobe to continue to use page recognition (OCR).
You can skip this section and the next if you already have an Adobe solution. Kindly reach out to Adobe at 1 (800) 833-6687 and wait for an agent to assist you. The waiting is sometimes an hour long during peak time, but if you try calling in the morning hours, you should be able to reach someone shortly. You will need your subscription detail. Mention that you have tried the steps outlined above, so you save sometime being suggested to do them again, as those are the most common steps of debugging
If you do not have a subscription with Adobe, you are likely using an unauthorized copy of Adobe Acrobat DC. Page recognition (OCR) may be simply unavailable as it requires communication with the Adobe Server. Page recognition (OCR) worked for some versions one can find on the internet for a long time, but recently most of them have stopped working, as Adobe has started to verify OCR requests sent to its server. In layman’s term, before the recent server update, Adobe received and processed OCR requests sent from any Adobe Acrobat Client. However, they have now started to require any such requests to be attached with verifiable subscription information. Most cracked Adobe Acrobat DC are made by replacing the software protection registry key (aka. the paywall) with a crack file. They are not logged in and does not contain valid subscription information. This means a request sent from a crack version is going to be identified as unverified and rejected. It is very hard to bypass this layer of protection, as it requires either hacking an Adobe server or compromising accounts of legitimate subscribers, which are both highly illegal and technically difficult. For this reason, anyone who claim that they have find a way to circumvent this issue permanently and is offering it to you for some money is highly likely a scammer.
Adobe likely started this verification process to protect themselves. Every year Adobe loses tens of millions of dollars to pirated copy of their software. For a long time, they had no effective way to combat this issue, as they used to have a verification system based on registration keys, which is relatively easy to overwrite. Nowadays, as they switched to a subscription model and started many cloud-based services, server-end verification become their go-to option to prevent people from using their software without paying. Without a subscription, you are going to be unable to use their cloud-based AI-enhanced functions such as page recognition (OCR), although it doesn’t affect your ability to access functions that does not require communication with their servers, which is still the overwhelming majority. If you really need these services, it’s time to consider a subscription with Adobe, which is currently priced at 14.99 USD per month in the U.S.
If you are just an occasional user and really do not feel like paying a considerable amount every year to Adobe, there are plenty of options, which I will cover in a future article
