How Much CO2 Does Your Solar System Actually Offset?

Solar panels get sold on bill savings and payback periods. The environmental math behind them usually gets a single line, if that. It deserves more, because the actual numbers, tons of CO2 avoided, equivalent trees planted, cars taken off the road, are concrete and calculable, not vague marketing language.

This one answers a narrow, specific question: given how much solar electricity you generated this year, how much CO2 did that keep out of the atmosphere?

Accuracy here depends entirely on the input. A single month's generation extrapolated into an annual figure will skew the result, since output varies by season. Twelve months of actual generation data gives a number worth quoting.

This one is built for planning rather than looking back. It takes system size in kW, peak sun hours, and expected system lifetime in years, and projects annual CO2 avoided alongside the cumulative lifetime figure, plus the lifetime tree equivalent.

This is the calculator that makes the case for solar as a long-term environmental decision, not just a financial one. A 5kW system running for 25 years produces a very different offset story than the same system's first-year number alone would suggest, and that compounding effect is exactly what gets lost when people only talk about annual savings.

Peak sun hours is the input people most often guess wrong on. It isn't total daylight hours, it's the hours of strong, usable sunlight your specific location gets, and it varies meaningfully by region.

What neither tool can account for is the condition of your roof, shading patterns unique to your property, or grid approval timelines, the details a proper site survey picks up. Treat these numbers as the planning-grade estimate they're meant to be, not the final word.
