Starting from zero is the default. Most successful founders had no audience when they began.
Here's how to get your first 10 customers without followers, ads, or luck:
1. Go Where They Already Are
Don't build an audience. Borrow one.
Your customers are already gathering somewhere. Find those places.
Twitter threads about their problem. Reddit posts asking for help. LinkedIn comments complaining about tools.
Join the conversation. Don't sell. Help.
2. Reply to Every Relevant Post
Set up keyword alerts for your problem space.
Someone asks about it? Be the first reply with something useful.
Not "check out my product." Actual help. Solve part of their problem in the reply.
People click profiles of helpful strangers. Your product link is in your bio.
3. DM the People Who Engage
Someone liked your reply? DM them.
"Saw you liked my comment about X. Curious, are you dealing with this yourself?"
Have a conversation. If they have the problem, offer to help. If it makes sense, mention your solution.
This is slow. That's fine. 10 real customers from DMs beats 1000 vanity visitors.
4. Create Content That Ranks
Write about the exact questions people Google.
"How to validate a business idea"
"Best tools for solo founders"
"How to price digital products"
Publish on platforms with domain authority (Dev.to, Medium, your own blog).
SEO is slow but compounding. A post you write today brings customers in 6 months.
5. Ask for Referrals Immediately
Got your first customer? Ask who else they know.
"Who else on your team has this problem?"
"What communities are you in where people talk about this?"
Warm introductions convert 10x better than cold outreach.
The hardest part is starting. Once you have 10 customers, you have proof. You have testimonials. You have a story.
Everything gets easier from there.
