How to Solve Wordle in 3 Guesses: 7 Strategies That Work

How to Solve Wordle in 3 Guesses: 7 Strategies That Work

I've been playing Wordle every day for over a year. My average went from 4.8 guesses to 3.4 once I stopped guessing randomly and started thinking strategically.

Here's what actually works.

1. Start With a Vowel-Heavy Word

Your first guess should maximize information. Words like ADIEU, AUDIO, or RAISE cover three vowels plus common consonants.

I use SLATE. It has S, L, A, T, E, five of the most common letters in English. One good starter tells you more than three random guesses.

2. Never Reuse Gray Letters

If a letter comes up gray, it's eliminated. Don't use it again. This sounds obvious, but under pressure, players keep reusing gray letters out of habit.

Keep a mental list of dead letters after each guess.

3. Think in Patterns, Not Letters

When you get a yellow A, don't just think "A goes somewhere." Think about where A appears in English: position 1 (ABOUT), position 3 (HEART), position 5 (EXTRA).

Common patterns: ST- starts, -IGHT endings, -TION suffixes. Run through patterns instead of guessing blindly.

4. Your Second Guess Matters Most

The second guess uses your first guess's information while gathering more. If SLATE gave you T green in position 3 and S yellow, your second word should keep T, move S, and add new letters like R, O, N.

5. Watch for Double Letters

Wordle loves doubles: LLAMA, GEESE, SASSY. If you're stuck on guess 5, ask: "Could there be a double letter I'm missing?"

6. Don't Forget Q, X, Z, J

After eliminating common letters, the answer is often weird. JOKER, QUILT, PIXEL, HAZEL. If you've tried all the normal letters, go strange.

7. Review Your Misses

When you fail or take 6 guesses, ask why. Did you reuse a gray? Miss a double? Panic-guess? I track my misses and found I was terrible at -CK endings.

The Bottom Line

Wordle is about information management, not vocabulary. Every guess should teach you something.

Start strong, eliminate aggressively, think in patterns. Your average will drop within weeks.
