The AI Tools Stack I Use Daily (All Free or Under $20/Month)

I've tested over 50 AI tools in the past year. Most are overhyped. Here are the ones I actually use every single day, what I use them for, and why they're worth it.

Tier 1: Daily Drivers (Free)

Claude (Free Tier)

Use for: Complex writing, analysis, code review, strategic thinking
Why: Best at following nuanced instructions. When I need something done RIGHT, not just done fast.

ChatGPT (Free Tier)

Use for: Quick lookups, brainstorming, simple drafts
Why: Fastest for simple tasks. Good mobile app for on-the-go.

Perplexity (Free)

Use for: Research with sources, fact-checking, competitive analysis
Why: Gives citations. When I need to VERIFY information, not just generate it.

Tier 2: Weekly Power Tools (Free)

Gamma.app (Free)

Use for: Presentations and pitch decks
Why: Turns a text outline into a professional slide deck in 60 seconds.

Canva AI (Free tier)

Use for: Social media graphics, thumbnails
Why: Magic Resize alone saves me 2 hours per week.

Notion AI (Free with Notion)

Use for: Meeting notes, project documentation
Why: Summarizes meeting transcripts and extracts action items automatically.

Tier 3: Paid But Worth Every Penny

Claude Pro ($20/month)

Use for: Heavy-duty work sessions, long documents, code projects
Why: Extended context window and priority access. Pays for itself in the first hour of use each month.

What I DON'T Pay For (And Why)

  • Jasper ($49/mo) — Claude does everything Jasper does, for free
  • Copy.ai ($49/mo) — Same. Use Claude with good prompts instead
  • Writesonic ($19/mo) — Unnecessary with free tier AI tools
  • Midjourney ($10/mo) — Canva AI covers 90% of my image needs

My Monthly AI Spend: $20

One subscription (Claude Pro) handles 95% of my AI workload. Everything else is free tier.

The secret isn't having more tools. It's knowing how to prompt the free ones effectively.

The Prompt Framework That Makes Free Tools Work Like Paid Ones

The difference between free-tier and paid results isn't the tool — it's the prompt. Use this framework:

  1. Role: Tell the AI who it is ("You are a senior copywriter...")
  2. Context: Give background info ("My audience is small business owners...")
  3. Task: Be specific ("Write 5 LinkedIn posts about...")
  4. Format: Define the output ("Each post should be under 150 words, include a hook...")
  5. Examples: Show what good looks like ("Here's a post that performed well...")

This framework turns any free AI tool into a professional-grade assistant.
