TL;DR
ChatGPT Free wins the ChatGPT vs Gemini free-tier fight in October 2026: unlimited text
chats on GPT-5.6 Luna, plus limited but present image creation, uploads, voice and research —
all at $0. Gemini Free answers with Search grounding, Nano Banana image generation and the
best Google integration, but its limits are unpublished, its context is 32K, and on
October 9, 2026 Google is cutting free users to Flash-Lite only (AI Plus loses Pro too).
If you ever pay: ChatGPT Go is $8/mo against Google AI Plus at $4.99; Plus $20 vs Google AI Pro
$19.99 is an ecosystem call, not a capability one.
The contenders
The ChatGPT vs Gemini rivalry now starts at $0: both companies give away a capable chatbot, and
the differences have moved to limits, models and ecosystem.
- ChatGPT (OpenAI): the generalist. Free plans get unlimited everyday text chat on GPT-5.6 Luna (since August 6, 2026), with limited messages for uploads, image creation, voice, deep research, memory, Codex and desktop Work — GPT-6 models stay behind payment, and ads may appear in the Free tier in some countries (the UK rollout started mid-2026).
- Gemini (Google): the ecosystem play. Free users get the Gemini app with compute-based "standard limits" (no published number) that refresh every five hours inside a weekly cap, a 32K-token context, Gemini 3 models, Nano Banana 2 image generation, Canvas, Gems and Search grounding — video generation, Gemini Spark and the daily brief stay paid.
Our existing Claude vs Gemini comparison asks which subscription earns its fee; this one
asks the only question free users care about — what do you actually get for $0 in October 2026?
ChatGPT vs Gemini free tiers: what $0 buys in October 2026
Pricing and limits as of October 2026 (official plan pages and help docs):
| ChatGPT Free | Gemini Free | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | $0 |
| Text chat | Unlimited, GPT-5.6 Luna (abuse guardrails) | Compute-based standard limits, 5-hour refresh + weekly cap |
| Best model | Luna only — no GPT-6 Astra or GPT-5.6 Sol in chat | Gemini 3 Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro until Oct 9; Flash-Lite only after |
| Context window | Not published by OpenAI | 32K tokens |
| Image generation | Yes, limited daily | Yes — Nano Banana 2 |
| File uploads | Yes, limited messages | Yes, within 32K context |
| Live information | Built-in web search | Search grounding with citations |
| Voice | Limited voice chat | Gemini Live voice mode included |
| Memory | Limited | Remembers details across chats |
| Ads | May appear in certain countries | Not announced for the app |
| Cheap upgrade | Go $8/mo | AI Plus $4.99/mo (2x limits, 128K context) |
The October 9 change. On October 3, 2026 Google confirmed that from October 9 free
Gemini users lose access to Gemini 3.6 Flash and 3.1 Pro — Flash-Lite only — while the $4.99
AI Plus tier keeps Flash but also loses Pro. AI Pro and AI Ultra keep everything. As of this
article's publication date (October 4), free users still have Flash and Pro; plan for the cut.
Test setup
Eight prompts, both products signed out of any paid plan, fresh sessions, same day:
- A 500-word draft from a 60-word brief (edited blind for voice)
- Summarize an uploaded 20-page PDF and answer five questions from it
- Generate an image for a slide from a text description
- A current-events question that requires live sourcing
- A multi-step math problem showing work
- Rewrite a stiff paragraph into three tones
- Debug a short Python function
- A long-context recall question across a pasted document
Scored: output quality at $0, limit friction, multimodal range, ecosystem reach.
Results
| Test | ChatGPT Free | Gemini Free |
|---|---|---|
| Draft (blind, /10) | 8.4 — natural rhythm, light edits | 8.1 — clean, slightly template-leaning |
| PDF summary | Handled, capped daily uploads | Handled inside 32K window |
| Image generation | Present, limited per day | Strong — Nano Banana 2 included free |
| Live facts | Search built in, cites sources | Search grounding, inline citations |
| Math and reasoning | Solid with Think on Luna | Flash/Pro strong until Oct 9, then Flash-Lite only |
| Tone rewrites | Unlimited text = no rationing | Subject to the five-hour window |
| Limit friction | Tool caps; ads in some regions | Opaque limits plus an imminent model downgrade |
| Ecosystem reach | Desktop/mobile apps, connectors, Word add-in, limited Codex | Android, Chrome, Search, Workspace and YouTube |
Free-tier chatbots are no longer separated by raw intelligence — both run competent Flash/Luna
class models with search. The gap is in headroom and stability: ChatGPT publishes unlimited
text and meters only the expensive tools, while Google has never published a free prompt count
and is actively shrinking free model access in October 2026.
Where ChatGPT Free wins
- Unlimited text, no clock: since August 2026 the Free plan has no message cap on Luna — Gemini free users still share an unpublished five-hour/weekly budget.
- Broader tools at $0: image creation, uploads, voice, data analysis and limited Codex all exist on Free; the caps are per tool, not a blanket pause.
- Model floor: you keep a full GPT-5.6 class model indefinitely; free Gemini becomes Flash-Lite only after October 9.
- Platform: desktop app, mobile, connectors, and the ChatGPT for Word add-in on every plan including Free.
Where Gemini Free wins
- Search grounding: cited Google Search answers on by default is the single best free research feature between the two.
- Google ecosystem: the Gemini app sits inside Android, Chrome and (with Workspace) Gmail and Docs; ChatGPT has no equivalent distribution.
- Image quality at $0: Nano Banana 2 generation is included and generous versus ChatGPT's limited free image allowance.
- Cheap step-up: AI Plus costs $4.99/mo for 2x limits and 128K context — the cheapest honest upgrade in the category (ChatGPT's equivalent floor is Go at $8).
If you do pay (brief)
| Plan | Price (Oct 2026) | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Go | $8/mo | More uploads, images, voice, longer memory; may include ads |
| Google AI Plus | $4.99/mo | 2x limits, 128K context, daily brief, video generation |
| ChatGPT Plus | $20/mo | GPT-6 reasoning, expanded research/memory, projects, tasks, Codex |
| Google AI Pro (ex-Gemini Advanced) | $19.99/mo | 4x limits, 1M-token context, 5 TB storage, YouTube Premium |
At $20 the two paid flagships are a wash on capability — Plus buys model depth and tooling,
AI Pro buys context, storage and Google services. That money question is covered in depth in
our Claude vs Gemini comparison; the free tiers above are where the real difference sits.
The bottom line
ChatGPT vs Gemini at $0 in 2026 is a question of what happens when you hit a wall: ChatGPT
stops you on a specific tool (images, uploads, voice) and shows you ads in some countries;
Gemini stops you on an unpublished clock and, from October 9, on model choice itself. Run the
same eight prompts on both free tiers this week — but if you want an answer now, ChatGPT Free
is the plan that still behaves like a full product. Prices and model access in this category
move monthly; all figures verified October 4, 2026.
Verdict: ChatGPT Free for most people; Gemini Free for Google-heavy users
ChatGPT Free gives you more: unlimited text on a capable model, working image/voice/upload
tools, and no scheduled downgrade. Gemini Free remains the better pick if your life runs
through Google — Search grounding and Android/Chrome distribution are unmatched — but the
October 9 cut to Flash-Lite makes it the riskier free plan. Pay $4.99 for AI Plus or $8 for
Go only after a week of real use shows you which wall you hit first.
