LocalAI Sidekick: A Private AI Assistant Without Expiring API Credits

Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle Submission πŸ’Έ

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle

What I Built

Meet LocalAI Sidekick β€” an AI assistant designed to help freelancers, students, and small business owners simplify repetitive tasks with AI.

Many AI tools rely on cloud APIs that impose usage limits, require API keys, or charge for every request. These costs can become a barrier for people building small businesses or experimenting with AI.

LocalAI Sidekick explores a local-first approach to AI-powered productivity, with the goal of making document processing and everyday business automation more accessible.

Key Features

  • Document Intelligence: Summarize documents and extract useful information.
  • Invoice Organization: Help organize invoice details and expense records.
  • Business Content Studio: Assist with product descriptions, emails, and marketing content.
  • Document Search: Find relevant information within supported documents.
  • Open-Weight AI: Designed to support compatible models through a local inference runtime.

The idea is simple: build a practical tool that saves time and could eventually become a useful product for freelancers and small businesses.

Demo

The application is deployed on Render. Some AI functionality may require additional local-model or inference-service configuration.

How I Built It

I built LocalAI Sidekick using a modern web stack and an architecture designed to support open-weight AI models.

Technology Stack

  • React + Vite: Frontend and user interface.
  • Python + FastAPI: Backend API and application logic.
  • Ollama: Local inference runtime for compatible models.
  • Qwen / Gemma: Candidate open-weight models, depending on the final configuration.
  • SQLite: Database support.
  • PyMuPDF + pandas: Document processing and data handling.
  • Render: Hosting the public web application.

How It Works

The intended workflow is:

  1. The user uploads or selects a supported document.
  2. The backend extracts and processes its content.
  3. The application prepares relevant information for the requested task.
  4. A configured AI model generates a response.
  5. The user reviews and uses the result.

The project aims to separate the application from a single AI provider, making it easier to experiment with different compatible models.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation gives developers more control over how AI applications are built, deployed, and maintained.

For a small side hustle, paying for every AI request can make costs unpredictable. Open-weight models offer an alternative: run inference on compatible hardware rather than relying entirely on a hosted API.

1. No Expiring Cloud API Credits for Local Inference

When a compatible model runs locally, its inference does not consume hosted LLM API credits. Users still need suitable hardware, and the application may have other hosting and maintenance costs.

2. Greater Privacy and Control

Documents such as invoices and business records can contain sensitive information. Local processing can reduce the need to send document contents to third-party AI providers.

3. Freedom to Experiment

Open-weight models make it possible to compare compatible models, customize workflows, and choose a balance between quality, speed, and resource usage.

4. Offline Potential

After the software and model have been downloaded and configured, supported local workflows can run without an active internet connection.

5. A Potential Side Hustle

A tool that saves freelancers time on repetitive document work could be monetized through paid customization, setup assistance, or support services. The next step is to validate the product with real users and understand which features they value enough to pay for.

For me, open innovation is about more than choosing a different model. It means having the freedom to build, modify, and improve useful AI tools without making every feature dependent on one provider.

My Agent Session

DevRelay Session: To be added after the session is successfully recorded and submitted.

I'll include the genuine shareable session link here so readers and judges can see the AI-assisted development process.

My First User

I'm looking to validate LocalAI Sidekick with freelancers or small business owners who regularly work with invoices and documents.

The next step is to collect real feedback, identify the most useful workflow, and measure whether the application saves users time.

Prize Categories

Potential category: Best Use of Gemma

I'll confirm eligibility after verifying that Gemma is actually integrated into the final implementation and documenting its role in the project.

What's Next?

  • Improve the document-processing workflow.
  • Verify local inference end to end.
  • Gather feedback from a first user.
  • Improve the deployment and documentation.
  • Continue experimenting with open-weight models.

Thanks for checking out LocalAI Sidekick! Feedback and suggestions are welcome.
