Statement
Energy directed at a structure without an accumulation function is neutralized regardless of its quantity. Energy directed at a structure with an accumulation function multiplies, even when the effect is not immediately observable.
This is a structural claim, not a normative one. Whether a unit of directed energy — capital, attention, or effort — produces a lasting effect depends on a property of the receiving structure, not on the size or sincerity of the input.
Definitions
Let E denote a unit of directed energy (money spent, attention given, effort invested), and S a structure that receives it.
S is neutralizing if:
S' ≈ S after receiving E
f(E, S) → 0 as the interaction concludes
S is multiplying if:
f(E, S) = E + f(E₁, S₁) + f(E₂, S₂) + …
(a recursive, compounding relation)
S is neutralizing if its post-receipt state S' is not meaningfully different from S, and E does not propagate to produce further downstream state changes in agents connected to S. The energy terminates at the point of contact.
S is multiplying if receiving E produces a state change that itself becomes a source of further directed energy — recursive rather than terminal.
The distinction has nothing to do with intent, effort, or moral weight. It depends entirely on whether S has a mechanism to retain, redistribute, or re-derive value from what it receives — the same property that separates a stateful system from a stateless one.
Four independent domains, one structure
The theorem isn't domain-specific. It recurs, independently derived, in at least four unrelated fields:
Economic — diminishing marginal utility. The same unit of capital produces radically different downstream effect depending on the receiving agent's state. Directed at an already-saturated agent: f(E, S) ≈ 0. Directed at an agent near a capability threshold: f(E, S) > E.
Economic — the multiplier effect. Capital directed at a structure with local re-circulation is re-spent within the same connected system multiple times before leaving it. Capital directed at a structure with immediate extraction exits on contact. Same input, different topology, different f.
Relational — commodity fetishism (Marx). Market exchange obscures the social relation between producer and consumer, replacing it with a relation between price and object. An untraceable relation can't be corrected, and can't accumulate trust or reciprocity — only price.
Cultural — recuperation (Debord). A critique of a structure, once it acquires enough symbolic value, becomes absorbable by that same structure as a commodity. This is not evidence the critique was wrong — it's evidence the absorptive capacity of the neutralizing structure extends even to artifacts built specifically to resist it.
Attentional — algorithmic engagement. A platform optimized for engagement doesn't just fail to preserve directed discourse — it repurposes the energy of that discourse as input to its own optimization target, regardless of content or valence. Catharsis research (Bushman et al.) has found that venting frequently reinforces the underlying state rather than discharging it, meaning even the felt sense of release may itself be another engagement signal, not a terminus.
Formal unification
These four domains aren't analogous by coincidence — they're instances of a single structural property: a system either has a mechanism for cumulative coordination, or it doesn't.
A structure with cumulative coordination — where a given resolution updates shared, durable state that later resolutions can draw on — is a multiplying structure by definition: f recurses because there's somewhere for the recursion to persist. A structure without it resets on every interaction, independent of how much energy any single interaction carries.
This is the same relation behind R(p, Γ) = m in The Meshia: outcome as a function of structure, not of raw input magnitude. Whether the input is a resolved namespace path, a monetary unit, or a unit of attention is incidental. What determines f(E, S) is whether S retains state.
Corollary
The relevant question when directing energy is never "how much." It's: does the receiving structure have a mechanism to retain what it receives, or only a mechanism to absorb it?
A structure can be large, prestigious, or urgent, and still be purely absorptive. A structure can be small, slow, and unnoticed, and still be genuinely cumulative. Size and visibility are uncorrelated with the presence of an accumulation function — which is exactly why the distinction is easy to miss and expensive to ignore.
