How to Survive Exams: A Marks-Per-Minute Strategy

Exams are not just tests of knowledge. They are also tests of decision-making under time pressure.

You can know 80% of the syllabus and still perform badly if you spend too much time fighting difficult questions. The smarter approach is to maximize the number of marks you can secure with the time and knowledge you actually have.

The basic principle is simple:

Don't solve the hardest question first. Solve the questions that give you the highest probability of marks for the least time.

The Priority Order

When answering the paper, a useful general priority is:

MCQ → Single-select → Passage → Numerical

This order is based on the probability of getting the question right and the amount of time usually required.

Question type Priority Main advantage
MCQ 1 Fast and can often be guessed
Single-select 2 Usually straightforward and quick
Passage/case-based 3 One passage can provide context for multiple questions
Numerical 4 Can take much longer and has more opportunities for calculation errors

This doesn't mean numericals are unimportant. Quite the opposite.

Numericals should often receive high priority during preparation, but not necessarily during the actual exam.


Why MCQs Come First

MCQs have a major advantage: you can guess.

Even when you don't know the answer immediately, you can often eliminate one or two options.

Suppose there are four options and you genuinely have no information. A completely random guess gives you roughly a:

25% chance of being correct.

If you can eliminate two obviously wrong options, your chance can effectively rise to around:

50%.

That makes MCQs unusually valuable.

There is another advantage: MCQs are often designed around concepts rather than requiring a complete calculation.

A numerical problem might require five steps.

An MCQ may ask:

"What happens to X if Y doubles?"

You might answer that in seconds using the relationship between the variables.

Therefore:

Never spend four minutes calculating something when the answer can be obtained in twenty seconds by reasoning from the options.


Single-Select Questions: The Second Harvest

Single-select questions are similar to MCQs, particularly when they have clearly distinguishable options.

The goal here is speed and confidence.

If you immediately recognize the concept, answer it and move on.

Don't turn a 30-second question into a five-minute investigation.

Your first pass through the paper should feel almost aggressive:

See → recognize → answer → move.

You're harvesting easy marks.


Passage Questions Deserve More Respect

Passage or case-based questions are easy to underestimate.

A passage may look intimidating because it contains a large amount of text. But that text can actually make the questions easier.

The passage provides context.

Instead of recalling everything from memory, you may be able to extract information directly from the given material and apply a concept to it.

Even better, one passage can contain several questions.

Suppose a passage generates five questions.

Once you've understood the passage, you have effectively unlocked five potential marks.

That makes passage questions more attractive than they initially appear.

The trick

Don't read the passage like a novel.

Look for:

  • What information is actually relevant?
  • What variables or facts are given?
  • What is each question asking?
  • Which questions can be answered directly?
  • Which questions require outside knowledge?

You don't necessarily need to understand every sentence.

You need to understand what the examiner wants you to extract from it.


Numericals: Don't Fear Them, Control Them

Numericals are where many students lose time.

A numerical can look simple but consume several minutes because of:

  • formula selection
  • algebra
  • unit conversion
  • arithmetic
  • interpreting the question
  • checking the answer

And then you can still get it wrong.

This is why numericals come later in the exam-solving priority order.

But there's an important distinction:

Numericals should be heavily practiced before the exam even if they are attempted later during the exam.

Why?

Because numerical practice improves more than numerical performance.

A well-understood numerical can become several types of questions.

For example, after solving a formula-based problem, ask:

  • What is the formula?
  • What happens if one variable doubles?
  • What happens if one variable becomes zero?
  • What are the units?
  • What is the approximate magnitude?
  • What happens if the direction/sign changes?
  • Can I eliminate any answer choices without calculating?

A numerical problem can therefore become a source of MCQ knowledge.


Turn Numericals Into MCQs

This is one of the most useful exam-preparation techniques.

Suppose you learn:

A ∝ B²

Instead of memorizing only the equation, ask:

If B doubles, what happens to A?

Answer:

A becomes four times larger.

That's now an MCQ-ready concept.

You don't need to perform a long calculation.

You simply understand the relationship.

This is why numerical practice has a multiplier effect.

You practice the numerical → understand the relationship → recognize conceptual MCQs → solve faster.


The Three-Pass Method

Instead of moving through the exam randomly, divide it into three passes.

Pass 1: Harvest the Easy Marks

Attempt:

  • Easy MCQs
  • Easy single-select questions
  • Questions you immediately recognize
  • Straightforward passage questions

Don't get emotionally attached to difficult questions.

If you don't know it, skip it temporarily.

Your objective is to collect the marks that are sitting in front of you.


Pass 2: Extract the Medium Marks

Now return to:

  • Moderate MCQs
  • Remaining passage questions
  • Familiar numericals
  • Questions requiring some calculation

At this stage, you have already secured your easy marks.

That reduces the pressure.


Pass 3: Fight the Difficult Questions

Only now should you spend serious time on:

  • Difficult numericals
  • Long calculations
  • Confusing conceptual questions
  • Questions requiring multiple steps

This is where you decide whether additional effort is actually worth it.


Don't Let One Numerical Eat the Exam

One of the biggest exam mistakes is spending too long on a single problem.

You calculate.

Something doesn't work.

You try again.

You change the formula.

You recalculate.

Five minutes disappear.

Meanwhile, there may have been several easier questions elsewhere on the paper.

Use a simple rule:

If a numerical isn't progressing, leave it and return later.

Skipping a question isn't failure.

Skipping strategically is exam management.


Guessing Is Also a Strategy

If there is no negative marking, unanswered MCQs are usually wasted opportunities.

Even if you don't know the answer, you can:

  1. Eliminate obviously wrong choices.
  2. Look for dimensional or unit inconsistencies.
  3. Check whether the magnitude makes sense.
  4. Use relationships from memory.
  5. Compare the options.
  6. Make the best remaining guess.

Don't confuse guessing with randomly clicking.

There is a difference between:

Random guessing

and

educated guessing after elimination.

The second can be surprisingly powerful.

If there is negative marking, however, the calculation changes. Guessing should depend on the marking scheme and how many options you can eliminate.


The Real Objective: Marks Per Minute

The best question isn't:

"Which question is hardest?"

Nor is it:

"Which question carries the most marks?"

Instead ask:

"Which question gives me the best expected return for the time I spend on it?"

Imagine two questions:

Question A

  • 1 mark
  • 30 seconds
  • 90% confidence

Question B

  • 1 mark
  • 4 minutes
  • 30% confidence

Question A is obviously the better investment.

This is the mindset of marks per minute.


Preparation vs Exam Strategy

This distinction is extremely important.

Your study priority doesn't have to be identical to your exam priority.

During preparation

Give strong attention to:

Concepts → Numericals → MCQs → Passage practice

Numericals help build deep understanding.

During the exam

Use:

MCQ → Single-select → Passage → Numerical

because now the objective has changed.

You're no longer learning.

You're converting knowledge into marks.


The Survival Formula

A practical exam strategy can be summarized as:

Secure easy marks → exploit guessing opportunities → capitalize on passages → attack numericals → return to leftovers.

Don't try to prove that you can solve every question.

Your goal is not to defeat the question paper.

Your goal is to beat the scoring system.

The student who solves every difficult numerical but leaves easy MCQs unanswered is playing the wrong game.

The student who quickly collects easy marks, uses elimination intelligently, extracts multiple answers from passages, and then spends the remaining time on numericals is playing the game correctly.

Final Rule

When the exam gets chaotic, remember four words:

MCQ → Single-select → Passage → Numerical

And one principle:

Maximize marks, not difficulty conquered.

Exams reward correct answers.

They don't give bonus marks because you spent ten minutes heroically wrestling with one impossible numerical.

Be ruthless with your time. Harvest the easy marks first. Then fight.
