Understanding Bufferbloat with a Simple Speed Test Workflow

Bufferbloat is the hidden reason your connection feels terrible even when a speed test shows excellent numbers. It is caused by routers buffering too much data during congestion, which inflates latency precisely when you need it low. The good news: you can detect it with a simple workflow.

What bufferbloat looks like

Imagine a fast highway with a huge parking lot at the exit. When traffic spikes, cars queue in the lot instead of flowing, and your packets do the same inside the router's buffer. The symptom is latency that explodes under load: great ping when idle, awful ping when someone streams or uploads.

The two-part test

A normal speed test misses bufferbloat because it measures idle latency. The fix is to measure twice: once with the line idle, and once while saturating the connection with a large download or upload. Wonder Signal's scenario presets approximate this by testing under simulated load, and comparing the latency between an idle run and a loaded run reveals the bloat directly.

Reading the result

If your loaded latency stays close to your idle latency, your router is handling congestion well. If latency jumps from 20 ms to 400 ms under load, you have classic bufferbloat. The fix is usually enabling Smart Queue Management or Quality of Service on your router, which actively manages the buffer instead of letting it fill.

Verify the fix

After changing router settings, repeat the two-part speed test. The improvement is often dramatic and immediate: loaded latency drops back toward idle levels. Keeping the before and after runs in your history gives you a permanent record of the fix, and a reminder of why the fastest plan in the world cannot cure a router that refuses to manage its own queue.
