Chargebee is a serious billing platform with serious native dunning: configurable retries, email sequences, a customer portal. Merchants on it do not have a tooling absence; they have a coverage question. Which failures does the native configuration actually reach, and which ones fall between its settings and the customer's reality?
The gaps are familiar in shape. Native retries run on the schedule the merchant configured once, usually at setup, usually generically. Decline-specific ladders, payday-aware spacing for insufficient funds, a strict stop on hard declines, and a backfill read of the failures that predate the configuration are rarely part of that first setup. The platform can do more than the default does; the default is what most stores run.
Chargebee dunning as a conducted layer is an audit before it is an automation: read the last ninety days of failures, split them by cause, and only then decide what the second engine should do that the first one is not already doing. Chargebee's own partner bar reflects the same seriousness; public marketplace listing there requires an established merchant base, which is why conducted help arrives as a private integration first.
