What 'Recovered' Should Mean in a Billing Report

Ask three tools what "recovered" means and you will get three numbers for the same month. One counts a retry that succeeded. One counts a customer who updated a card after any email, including the one the merchant sent by hand. One counts revenue that would have arrived anyway through the processor's own retries and quietly books it as its own work. The word is doing too much lifting.

A defensible definition is narrow: a recovery is a dollar that settled through exactly one door, stamped at the moment it landed. Retry first, then card update, then a save offer — in that priority — and everything outside those doors is reported honestly as external. One choke point for the stamp makes double-counting structurally impossible rather than merely discouraged.

The point is not accounting purity. It is that a merchant deciding whether a tool pays for itself deserves a number that cannot be inflated by definition. Churn recovery reporting should survive the question "show me exactly which dollars, and through which door" — anything softer is marketing wearing a dashboard.
