robinhood launched agent credit cards today. here's the infrastructure gap it opens

robinhood shipped agentic trading and an agentic credit card on may 27. each third-party AI assistant gets a virtual card with monthly spend limits, 3% cash back, transaction notifications, and fraud monitoring. ~700k robinhood gold cardholders are the early addressable market.

it's the most concrete proof yet that autonomous agent payments work at consumer scale.

the gap it reveals is reputation. when your AI assistant connects to your robinhood card, robinhood can enforce a monthly cap. but how does robinhood decide whether to raise that cap over time — or whether to trust a new agent connecting for the first time? FICO was built for human borrowers in 1989. it tracks credit card repayment history. an AI agent has none of that.

what an agent does have is operational history: transaction completion rate, settlement velocity, instruction adherence over time, error and retry patterns. that's the raw material for an agent credit score — and it's orthogonal to the cardholder's personal FICO.

the market is moving fast here. mastercard's agent pay framework (may 2026, 99% of issuers enabled) ships cryptographic "verifiable intent" that binds a transaction to a specific agent identity. google's AP2 protocol (60+ partners) uses "mandates" for the same purpose. the payment rails are being standardized.

what isn't standardized yet is the reputation layer above the rails — portable across robinhood cards, mastercard agentic tokens, x402 micropayment headers, and whatever coinbase builds next.
