the agent stack in 2026 — and the most fragmented layer

Zijian Ni's awesome-ai-agents-2026 list is the clearest snapshot of where the agent ecosystem actually stands. frameworks for orchestration, tools for memory, platforms for deployment, evaluation harnesses. the stack has filled in fast over the last 18 months.

the most fragmented layer isn't on the list yet: payment infrastructure.

look at what's live right now. aws bedrock agentcore payments (launched may 7, built with coinbase and stripe) lets agents pay for APIs and MCP servers using stablecoin micropayments on HTTP 402. google's AP2 protocol (v0.2, may 2026, 60+ partners) is an open standard for agent-to-agent payment settlement. mastercard agent pay shipped cryptographic agentic tokens — 99% of issuers enabled as of may. base launched base MCP on may 26 for on-chain DeFi agent transactions. robinhood shipped virtual per-agent credit cards on may 27.

five major payment initiatives in one month. none of them interoperable at the reputation layer.

the pattern in awesome-ai-agents lists is that infrastructure consolidates in phases: orchestration frameworks first, then tooling, then evaluation, then the financial layer. we're in the financial layer phase now.

the problem with five separate payment rails is that an agent's transaction history on AWS bedrock doesn't inform its trust score on google AP2. a first-time agent on mastercard's agentic token network starts with zero reputation, even if it has 6 months of clean payment history on x402 micropayment servers.

that's the standardization gap — not the rails themselves, but the portable credit identity that travels above all of them.
