People hear "IT consulting" all the time. But what does it mean? Here is a plain answer.
The short version
A company has a tech problem. It does not have the right people to fix it, or it does not have enough time. So it brings in outside experts for a while. Those experts are IT consultants.
What consultants do
Consultants look at what a company has today. Then they help it decide what to build or change. Often they also do the work. They may:
- Look at an old system and find what slows it down.
- Plan a new app or tool.
- Write and test the code.
- Move data from an old system to a new one.
- Teach the company's own team how to run the new system.
Consulting, staffing and project work: what is the difference?
These three words often show up together. They are not the same.
IT staffing means a company needs a person with certain tech skills. A staffing firm finds that person. The person joins the client's team and works there, often for months.
IT software consulting means the client wants expert advice and help on a tech problem. The consultant brings both the skills and a plan.
Project development means building one thing from start to finish, like a new app. The project has a clear goal and an end.
