Shopify Mobile App vs Progressive Web App (PWA): Which Is Right for UK Brands? (2026)

Shopify Mobile App vs Progressive Web App (PWA): Which Is Right for UK Brands? (2026)

Last updated: May 2026 | Reading time: 9 minutes

Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) are frequently presented as a middle path between a mobile website and a native app. For UK Shopify brands making revenue decisions, the limitations are significant.

What a PWA actually is

A Progressive Web App is a website enhanced with specific web capabilities: service workers (offline caching), a Web App Manifest (install icon/name), and the Push API (web-based push notifications).

This creates an "Add to Home Screen" experience — an icon on the phone that opens the site without browser chrome.

The push notification problem with PWAs

iOS limitations. Apple only added partial web push support in Safari 16.4 (iOS 16.4, March 2023):

  • User must add PWA to Home Screen before web push can be enabled
  • Requires a separate additional permission prompt
  • Notification badge counts and lock screen delivery are less reliable

Practical result: PWA push opt-in rates on iOS are 15-30%, vs 45-65% for native iOS apps. iOS drives 60-70% of revenue for premium UK fashion brands.

App Store distribution vs PWA distribution

Native apps benefit from:

  • App Store browse and search as real acquisition channels
  • Ratings/reviews providing social proof
  • Paid App Install campaigns on Meta and Google
  • Brand credibility signals

PWAs have none of these.

The honest comparison

Native App PWA
Push notifications on iOS 45-65% opt-in 15-30% opt-in
Shopify Checkout Kit Yes No
App Store presence Yes No
Paid App Install campaigns Yes No
Monthly cost £1,999/mo £50-£200/mo

For UK Shopify brands where push notification revenue is the primary commercial case, native is the only approach that delivers at scale on iOS.
