Building Persistent AI Memory for Docusaurus Documentation Sites Using Cognee

Documentation is the single most critical asset for open-source libraries and developer-focused platforms. Flagship technologies like React, Supabase, Redis, Algolia, and Babel rely on Docusaurus to organize their guides, API documentation, and architecture manuals.

However, standard LLM applications struggle with technical docs. When using basic chunked vector retrieval (RAG), the AI loses structural context:

  • It fails to understand sidebar categories and prerequisite hierarchies.
  • It mangles custom documentation admonitions (:::note, :::tip, :::danger).
  • It cannot answer multi-hop architectural questions connecting setup steps to API schemas.

To eliminate this bottleneck, we engineered the Docusaurus Data Connector for Cognee, transforming Docusaurus sites into persistent, interconnected knowledge graphs.

Why Knowledge Graphs Beat Vector Chunking for Docs

In technical documentation, structure carries meaning:

  • Prerequisites depend on Environment Setup.
  • Configuration Parameters relate to specific SDK Version Features.
  • Admonitions alert developers to breaking changes and security considerations.

Cognee ingests documents into a persistent graph and vector store, mapping entities and semantic relationships directly into nodes and edges.

The Pipeline Architecture

Docusaurus Site (sidebars.json + docs/)
  │
  ▼ (Sidebar Categories & Breadcrumbs)
docusaurus_source() [dlt]
  │
  ▼ (Admonition & Frontmatter Sanitization)
Semantic Markdown Documents (DOCUMENT_SOURCE_ATTR = 'docusaurus')
  │
  ▼ (cognify())
Persistent Knowledge Graph & Vectors (Cognee Engine)
  │
  ▼ (cognee.search(INSIGHTS))

Technical Highlights of the Docusaurus Connector

  1. Sidebar Hierarchy Traversal: Automatically inspects sidebars.json to recursively extract documentation categories and navigation paths, prefixing every document with contextual breadcrumbs (Section: Sidebar > Category > Subcategory).
  2. Admonition Parser: Translates Docusaurus-specific admonition syntax (:::note, :::tip, :::danger) into semantic Markdown callout blocks, preserving developer warnings without cluttering LLM prompts with custom JSX.
  3. Full-Snapshot Sync + Forget-on-Delete: Built with write_disposition="replace" under dlt. Any document deleted or moved in docs/ is automatically forgotten from the graph via Cognee's orphan_cleanup.
  4. Document-Mode Processing: Sets DOCUMENT_SOURCE_ATTR = "docusaurus", directing documents straight into Cognee's natural language cognify entity-extraction pipeline.

Quickstart Tutorial

1. Installation

pip install cognee-community-connector-docusaurus cognee
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

2. Ingestion & Graph Building

import asyncio
from pathlib import Path
import cognee
from cognee_community_connector_docusaurus import docusaurus_source

async def main():
    # 1. Point to your Docusaurus directory
    source = docusaurus_source(site_path="./path/to/docusaurus-site")

    # 2. Ingest documentation pages
    print("Ingesting Docusaurus pages into Cognee...")
    await cognee.add(source)

    # 3. Extract knowledge graph entities and relations
    print("Building knowledge graph...")
    await cognee.cognify()
    print("Graph memory successfully built!")

if __name__ == "__main__":
    asyncio.run(main())
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

3. Querying for Semantic Insights

async def query_docs():
    insights = await cognee.search(
        query_type="INSIGHTS",
        query_text="What are the breaking changes and migration steps described in the documentation?",
    )
    print("Agent Insights:\n", insights)

asyncio.run(query_docs())
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Cognee navigates the knowledge graph edges directly connecting breaking change nodes to their relevant migration sections.

Conclusion & Mergetober

The Docusaurus connector allows any team using Docusaurus to give their AI agents persistent, graph-structured technical memory in minutes.
