Everyone says "write long content to rank". So I measured what actually ranks.
For our free pomodoro timer we scraped the current top-ranking pages and recorded real numbers — content length, FAQ presence, images:
| Site | Words |
|---|---|
| morgen.so | 1,448 |
| pomofocus.io | 392 |
| tomatotimers.com | 237 |
Median: 392 words. The pages winning this keyword are not 3,000-word essays — most are the tool itself plus a short explainer.
What we did with that data
Instead of copy-catting, we inverted: one book-length, measured guide per tool — how-to, mistakes-to-avoid, no-signup comparison, FAQ with schema — built only from our own research pool (real SERP titles, real scraped word counts, real feature matrices). 100+ guides so far across 272 tools, all listed in one sitemap: https://toolfyra.com/sitemap.xml
Three takeaways for indie builders
- Measure, don't guess. A 10-line scrape script told us more than any "SEO guru" thread.
- Intent > length. For tool keywords, users want the tool; the content job is trust + edge-case answers (offline? signup? mobile?).
- FAQ schema earns the PAA real estate. Our guides ship FAQPage JSON-LD built from the same questions we found in People-Also-Ask.
The timer itself: free, no signup, runs in the tab: https://toolfyra.com/pomodoro-timer.html
Disclosure: I run Toolfyra. Numbers above were measured live from ranking pages, not invented.
