If you can successfully log into the Postman web dashboard but find yourself stuck or unable to sign into the Postman Desktop App, you are likely dealing with a corrupted local session or a broken deep-link handler.
Follow this quick guide to resolve the issue by performing a clean reset of Postman’s local cache on macOS.
The Problem
When you click Sign In inside the Postman desktop app, it redirects you to your web browser. You log in successfully on the web, but the browser fails to pass the authentication token back to the desktop application. The desktop app remains stuck on the sign-in screen or throws a connection error.
The Solution: Clear Corrupted Application Support Data
The most reliable fix is to clear out Postman's cached local storage, forcing the app to rebuild its configuration files from scratch.
Step 1: Quit Postman Completely
Ensure the Postman desktop application is fully closed.
• Press Cmd + Q while the app is active, or right-click the Postman icon in your Dock and select Quit.
Step 2: Open the Library Folder
- Open Finder.
- Click Go in the top menu bar.
- Hold down the Option (⌥) key on your keyboard. The hidden Library folder will appear in the dropdown list. Click it. Step 3: Delete the Postman Support Folder
- Inside the Library folder, navigate to: Application Support > Postman.
- Alternatively, you can use the shortcut
Cmd + Shift + Gin Finder and paste the following path directly:
~/Library/Application Support/Postman
Use code with caution.
- Move the entire Postman folder to the Trash.
Step 4: Relaunch and Sign In
- Empty your Trash.
- Reopen the Postman Desktop App.
- Click Sign In. Your browser will open, allowing you to authenticate normally.
- Click Open Postman when prompted by your browser to sync your account.
Why This Works
Postman stores local session configurations, environments, and sync tokens in your system's Application Support directory. Over time, or after sequential updates, these tokens can become corrupted. Deleting this folder removes the broken authentication loop without affecting your collections, as your actual API data is securely backed up and synced to the Postman cloud.
