There is an interesting shift happening in how we talk about technology in Africa.
For years, the dominant model was:
Build technology elsewhere → bring it to Africa → Africans adopt it.
AI creates an opportunity to change that model.
Instead of only asking "Which AI tool should we use?", we can start asking:
"What AI tools should we build?"
That was one of the strongest ideas emerging from a recent Techeconomy Business Series discussion on AI, talent and the future of work.
The Four Cs developers shouldn't ignore
Kamal Dandina described four competencies that will remain important as automation increases:
Critical thinking
Creativity
Communication
Character
At first glance, none of these sounds particularly technical.
But they matter enormously to developers.
Critical thinking
An LLM can generate code.
That doesn't mean the code is correct.
A developer still needs to understand:
Why the code works
When it fails
Whether it is secure
Whether it scales
Whether it actually solves the problem
AI increases the amount of code we can produce.
Critical thinking determines whether we should ship it.
Creativity
If AI can generate a hundred implementations, the valuable question becomes:
What should we build in the first place?
Developers who understand users and can identify meaningful problems will remain valuable.
Communication
Modern software is rarely built alone.
Developers communicate with designers, product managers, users, security teams and other engineers.
AI doesn't remove that requirement.
Character
This one is particularly relevant to AI.
Just because you can automate something doesn't mean you should.
Developers increasingly have to think about privacy, security, bias, consent and the consequences of automated decisions.
Africa needs to move up the stack
There is a huge difference between having millions of people using AI and having companies capable of building AI products.
Africa needs both.
The continent needs users who understand how to apply AI productively.
But it also needs:
AI engineers
Data scientists
ML researchers
Software engineers
Cloud engineers
Cybersecurity professionals
Product builders
AI safety and governance specialists
Robert B. Duke argued during the discussion that African companies should invest in creating and owning AI technologies rather than simply licensing foreign tools.
That's a much bigger ambition than becoming good at prompt engineering.
Build for African problems
Imagine AI systems designed specifically for:
African languages
African agriculture
African healthcare
African education
African logistics
African financial systems
African cybersecurity
African public services
The goal isn't to build "African versions" of every global product.
It's to identify problems where local context creates an advantage.
That is where context matters.
A model designed around the assumptions of another market may not understand the realities of a Nigerian user.
Local builders can.
But don't skip the guardrails
More AI development also means more responsibility.
The panel specifically raised concerns around data protection, confidentiality and human oversight. Automated systems should not simply be allowed to make consequential decisions without appropriate human accountability.
For developers, this means responsible AI needs to be considered during development, not after deployment.
What does this mean for someone learning to code?
It means you shouldn't think of your career as:
HTML → CSS → JavaScript → framework → job.
Those fundamentals still matter.
But the long-term opportunity is much wider.
Learn how systems work.
Learn how data moves.
Understand APIs.
Understand databases.
Explore AI.
Learn cybersecurity fundamentals.
Build actual projects.
And most importantly, learn how to identify problems worth solving.

From users to builders

So here's the question I'd leave developers with:
Are we preparing ourselves to use the next generation of AI or to build it?
Because those are two very different opportunities.
