Apple's first folding iPhone has a cover layer over its inner display that owners can have peeled off and replaced, Apple hardware chief Kate Bergeron said this week. The layer is what hides the crease where the screen folds, and AppleCare+ customers will pay $19 to swap it. For anyone weighing a $1,999 phone, that turns the foldable's best-known weakness into a maintenance item with a price.

Bergeron, Apple's vice president of hardware engineering, made the comments in a TikTok interview with content creator Angelica Siciliani Fendi, who posts as Angie Tutorials, according to MacRumors. "It's actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer that you can peel off that layer and get a new one," she said.

Apple announced the iPhone Duo on September 9 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, as Tech AI Wire reported at the time.

What the cover layer is

Every folding phone has a visible line where the display bends. Apple's approach, as Bergeron described it, has two parts. "The matte display coating does a really nice job of minimizing the crease," she said in the interview, as quoted by TechTimes. "But there's a cover layer on top, and we've done a significant amount of engineering work to help that wear in as long of a manner as we can."

iClarified describes the layer as a nano-textured polymer sheet that sits on top of the display and is separate from the panel underneath. Its matte finish softens the look of the crease. It is also the surface you touch every time you open the phone, which is why it is the part that wears.

The layer is cosmetic. iClarified notes that replacing it cannot remove the physical fold in the display beneath it. TechTimes adds that other foldable makers offer similar replaceable layers.

What a replacement costs

Detail What is known
Price with AppleCare+ $19, per Apple's repair estimator
Price without AppleCare+ Not yet disclosed
Who does it Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers
Do it yourself Unclear
Expected lifespan Not stated

The $19 figure comes from Apple's repair estimator for customers with AppleCare+ coverage, iClarified reports. MacRumors, iPhone in Canada and TechTimes all say Apple has not disclosed the out-of-coverage price. Replacements run through Apple Stores and authorized providers. Whether customers can replace the layer themselves is unclear, per iClarified.

Apple has not said how long a layer should last. TechTimes notes the answer depends on use. Someone who opens the phone dozens of times a day will wear it faster.

When you can buy one

Pre-orders open on October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific, and the iPhone Duo ships on October 23, 2026, according to MacRumors. The US price starts at $1,999, TechTimes reports, and iPhone in Canada lists the Canadian starting price at CA$2,999. TechTimes lists the hardware: Grade 5 titanium, a 7.6-inch inner display and iOS 27.

What this means for developers

If you are buying a Duo for your team, budget for AppleCare+ and treat the cover layer as a consumable. At $19 per swap with coverage, the plan is likely to pay for itself the first time the crease starts to show. Without coverage, the price is unknown. Ask before you buy if you plan to skip the plan.

If you build iOS apps, the crease now has an official design status. It is something Apple works to hide, not something it has eliminated. Keep controls and text off the fold line on the 7.6-inch inner display. Test your layouts on a device whose cover layer is worn, not only on a fresh demo unit.

If you manage devices, the replacement runs through Apple Stores and authorized providers, not the user. Plan for a store visit per phone. Watch for Apple to publish the out-of-coverage price and a lifespan figure. Those two numbers decide whether the layer is a minor cost or a recurring one.
