OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue was approaching $50 billion at the end of September 2026, the Financial Times reported on October 8. That is about $20 billion below the figure of nearly $70 billion reported in late September. The gap hit AI stocks the same day and reopened a question for every company buying AI: how big is the market leader's business, really?

Two numbers, two ways of counting

Annualized revenue, or run rate, takes one recent month of sales and multiplies it by 12. It is a snapshot of pace, not a year's actual income.

TechCrunch reports that Axios first put the run rate near $70 billion on September 29. Other outlets cited $68 billion. According to the FT, that larger number came from OpenAI's own investors. They built it to compare OpenAI directly with Anthropic.

The difference comes down to accounting:

How it counts sales through cloud partners Figure cited
Anthropic Counts the full sale, including Claude sold by Amazon, Microsoft and Google More than $65 billion annualized at end of July
OpenAI, as reported to investors Counts only its own share Approaching $50 billion at end of September
OpenAI, investor estimate Adjusted to match Anthropic's method About $68 billion to $70 billion

SiliconANGLE says a source described the $50 billion as net revenue. The higher figure included gross revenue from partners.

Who said what

The reports do not fully agree on where the $70 billion came from. The Next Web collected the competing accounts:

  • The FT said it came from OpenAI's own investors comparing the company with Anthropic.
  • The Information said earlier reports came from one unnamed investor's estimate.
  • Reuters said OpenAI pointed to the figure at a separate investor event.
  • Bloomberg reported on October 9 that $70 billion is OpenAI's run-rate target for the end of 2026. OpenAI declined to comment to Bloomberg.

OpenAI's growth figures also come in two versions. A source told CNBC that the overall run rate grew 77% in the third quarter, and the enterprise business 107%. The Information reported that finance chief Sarah Friar put growth from end-June to end-September at 70%.

The market reaction

The FT report came out on October 8. SiliconANGLE says the Nasdaq fell 1.25%, its worst day since mid-August, and the S&P 500 lost 0.5%.

Company Move on October 8
CoreWeave -8%
Oracle -5.5%
Intel -5.3%
Super Micro Computer almost -5%
AMD -4%
Broadcom -4%
Nvidia -2.9%

Most of these companies sell the chips, servers and cloud capacity that AI runs on. SiliconANGLE ties the drop to the lower OpenAI figure and to doubts that AI demand justifies their valuations.

The fundraising backdrop

The timing is awkward for OpenAI. The Next Web, citing Bloomberg, reports it is seeking $30 billion or more at a $1.4 trillion valuation before the new money. TechCrunch notes that OpenAI raised $122 billion in March. Its 2025 revenue was about $13 billion, according to leaked financials.

OpenAI has also delayed its stock market listing. SiliconANGLE says it filed confidentially in June and is now eyeing a 2027 debut. Anthropic is expected to list as soon as November, The Next Web reports, citing Bloomberg. That puts the two companies' numbers side by side in public filings soon.

Holger Mueller of Constellation Research told SiliconANGLE that OpenAI now has "no room for error."

What this means for developers

Most teams do not buy OpenAI stock, but many depend on its API and on its partners' prices.

  • Read run-rate claims with care. A run rate is one month times 12, and companies count partner sales differently. Compare vendors on what they charge you, not on headline revenue.
  • Expect pricing pressure, in both directions. A company raising $30 billion has reason to push higher-margin plans. Its rivals have reason to cut prices to win your workload. Recheck your rates each quarter.
  • Keep a second provider ready. Revenue doubts touch the whole supply chain, from Oracle to CoreWeave. Code that can switch models with a configuration change is cheap insurance.
  • Watch the filings. Anthropic's listing, and later OpenAI's, will publish audited numbers. Those will settle the counting argument better than any leak.

Earlier reporting on OpenAI's ChatGPT ads reaching a $1 billion run rate used the same pace-based measure.
