If I Could Restart My Telecom Career, Here's What I'd Do Differently

Hi DEV community! 👋

Recently I was thinking about my own journey in telecom (mobile networks like 4G and 5G), and one question kept coming back: if I could start again, what would I do differently?

Here is my list. These lessons apply to almost any tech career, not just telecom. 👇

1. Read the standards, not just the slides 📘

In the beginning, I depended on vendor documents and presentations. Later I started reading the actual 3GPP specs, the global standards behind 4G and 5G. They explain why things work the way they do. In software, it's like reading official docs and RFCs instead of only tutorials.

2. Learn the whole system, not just your corner 🧩

It's easy to stay in one domain. But understanding how data flows from a phone through the core network to the internet makes troubleshooting much faster.

3. Learn Python and data skills sooner 🐍

Telecom work involves huge amounts of KPIs, counters and logs. A simple Python script can replace hours of manual Excel work.

4. Spend more time in the field 📡

Site visits and drive tests teach things no document can, like how antennas, interference and even a bad cable affect real performance.

5. Document every strange problem 📝

Every weird issue I solved and didn't write down came back later. A simple notebook of problem → cause → fix is gold. In fact, this habit is one reason I started writing guides at TechLTE World.

6. Talk to people outside your company 🤝

Forums, conferences and communities help you learn faster and see how others solve the same problems.

7. Don't ignore soft skills 🗣️

Explaining a technical issue clearly to a manager or customer is as important as solving it. Writing simple content has taught me this even more.

8. Follow new trends early 🚀

Open RAN, satellite networks (NTN), AI in networks and 5G-Advanced are growing fast. Being early on a topic makes a big difference.

Now it's your turn 💬

  • What is the one thing you would do differently in your career?
  • Which skill or experience helped you the most?
  • What advice would you give someone starting in tech today?

Let's share in the comments.
