Murthy had already seen a startup fail. His company Softronics folded after about a year and a half, and he joined Patni Computer Systems in Pune before founding Infosys.
At Infosys, he served as CEO for 21 years, from 1981 to 2002. During that time he articulated, designed and implemented a global delivery model for IT services outsourcing from India, a model built on teams doing the work from India for clients around the world.
In 2002 he handed the CEO role to co-founder Nandan Nilekani, and the company kept growing under a leadership structure that had been built around its people.
“Our assets walk out of the door each evening. We have to make sure that they come back the next morning.”
- N. R. Narayana Murthy
